If in doubt, use Aperture Priority mode. Also shoot in RAW so if underexpose or what can adjust later in Photoshop.

Since you are new... I assume that you only got 400D and the kit lens.

You can set to P mode and the cam will do most of the work for you.

However I also recommend you use portrait mode. Only thing is that you have to be careful which of the 9 auto focus point is selected by the cam.

Got it! Thanks guys.

After posting this, I'm off to my church concert. Hope that my little knowledge and my eye for good pictures work well for me.

Will post a couple of my shots here when done. :)

SHOOT RAW!

at least if u screw up exposure easier to fix.

If you want to have your subject in focus and blur the background as much as possible, zoom in to your maximum tele focal range and move closer to your subject.

Longer the focal length, nearer the subject to you, further the background to the subject, larger the aperture => better background blur effect.

You may not get the creamy blur that can be created by a good prime lens but I guess you won't be that demanding at this point? :)

If you have the time to borrow/rent a 2.8 lens or a flash within tomorrow morning to afternoon
since the concert start @ 6.30pm, that will give you more advantages .. Cheers

God Bless and Jia you

Brother
