i have a dry box with a dial where i store my cam body and some accessories. i added silcone gel and locked it tight but the reading is always about 65-70%

what should be the actual or more preffered humidity lvl?

Leak or your RH gauge meter spoilt.
Buy digital one and put in see whether you will get the same reading or not?

Prefer (40~50)% RH

By the way, the dry cabinet can go all the way to 30+%. How come most people keep their equipments in 40-50% or 45-55%? I thought drier should be better?

tat's right. it dried up the lubricant and suddenly everything becomes stiff.

And the rubber on your camera body's grip & lens barrels will crack.
