I am more refering to the left hand that holding the lens zoom ring.
1) Can I hold it such way that the left plam facing front and thumb
facing downward?
2) Or thumb facing toward left side and plam facing ownself?

I am asking cos I see some Sigma lens zoom ring is very near to the mounting
and if using method 2, difficult to turn the zoom ring.
method 1 feel better.
Thanks.

Option 2 is ideal because it also gives you support from the glass's weight, you will be able to hold your hand and rest your arm against your body for more support and to reduce hand shake. Also, if you're using AF-S glasses, holding the bottom of the glass allows you not only to zoom but also to override the AF if necessary.

I do both.
Option 2 when handholding
Option 1 when the camera is tripod/monopod mounted.

left hand thumb point upwards, let the lens rest on left hand palm

depends which you more comfortable with... same like which leg goes 1st, once u learn it, u can't unlearn, so when you are comfortable with whichever style, den use that style... just enhance on the stability...

Just got back whole day from my company conference at Oriental Hotel..
2 more days to go..
Tried the both way on a just bought used sigma and option 2 is the best..:D
