my budget is around $100

The brand 'Philips' may not come immediately into everybody's mind when buying a headphones or earphones. Philips does make some very good earphones and headphones for very reasonable prices.

My current computer headphones is a Philips and I find it to be very good when comparing against my Grados and AKGs.

I paid S$67 for mine.

Hi glennyong,

I personally don't think that this circuit when built will rock your sox off.

Why ?

To get the warmth of valves, you need the entire circuit to be valves.

I am open to debate here and will appreciate any suggestions otherwise.

I would be looking for (if you care to build one) a well designed discrete headphone amplifier, (one without IC's).

Someone that understands circuit design in audio and knows how to handle the use of discrete components can design a circuit that will leave the best way behind.

Just my thoughts :)

Oh, may I say, how far do you want to go.... and will you notice it

My father had an electronics business and one of the tech's name was Ong.

Ong was a very talented technician and we were good friends.

One day I went to his apartment to see his sound setup he had built (we were both into good music).

He (Ong) had designed and built a pair of electrostatic tweeters.

He designed the midrange towers (tuned them with amounts of drinking straws to get the cavity flow right)

He built a pair of Kef transmission line base boxes (rather large).

He designed and built a pre-amplifier and power amplifier to the 'nth degree tollerence.

To me, and I guess to another person that would appreciate what Ong had done, I stood in awe.

He had a Transcriptor turntable with a Shure mark III head (the turntable was upon a cement pole through the floor).

We listened to a classical track and then a Pink Floyd track I like.

Do you know what he said to me :dunno:

Don't you think it is a little low at 450HZ.

Ong was not listening to the music !!! he was listening for flaws (flaws that 99% of us would not hear nor care about).

What am I saying here after this rant ?

Enjoy what you listen to...if it is sounding good and is not distorted..play it and enjoy it.

Sorry for the long blurb :bsmilie:
