Got a question for you fish hobbyist. I'm looking to buy a 4ft tank (probably 4x1.5x1.5 feet) and am concerned about how thick the glass should be. Most of the 4ft tanks I see on Yahoo auction and so on are 5mm thick, but the guy at the fish shop near my place has told me that MINIMUM for a 4ft tank should be 6mm, else I'll risk rupturing the tank one fine day. Other places have said that it ranges between 6-10mm! :bigeyes:

I intend to keep an Oscar fish, with some other smaller fishes in this tank, and to put a sand/gravel bed with some driftwood and rocks as well. Just wanna know what thickness of tank I should get! TIA

4ft better to go 10mm and no less than 8mm. And do not use tempered glass. Suggest you visit some local aquatic forums to check out the fellow hobbyists:

Wah, at least 8mm! BTW, how much would a 4x1.5x1.5 @8mm thick aquarium cost me? And where would be a good place to buy? Thanks for the links, will check it out...

Just curious why there are so many 4ft, 5mm tanks out there then :think:

you can check out Nature Aquarium opposite Thomson Medical Centre. They have a range of good and well-constructed tanks. My advise, if you're going to enjoy your hobby do not scrimp on the basic necessities and their quality.

5mm tanks regardless of size, is a timebomb waiting to go. how do you like 50 gallons of fishy water on your living room floor? that's what happened to a colleague (it was only 2ft tank) when a lightning strike very close-by generated enough vibration to shatter the glass!

Actually had it happen years ago. We had a giant gurami in a 6ft tank. One morning we heard a loud crash and rushed downstairs to find the entire downstairs like a swimming pool. Good thing the 6x4ft carpet absorbed up a lot of water, otherwise it would have been worse

ya, I agree with choy. you really don't really save and risk creating more problems. Some LFS do build tank with thinner side glass and a thicker glass at the bottom. Whichever is the case, you should get a thicker tank because you are going to load it with a gravel base. C328 aka clementi blk 328, Clementi Florist and Aquarium is a good place to start your search, including NA which choy pointed out as well

For quality tank I would go with Nature Aquarium. If you have $$ to burn and try Systems and Control Engineering at Boon Keng Road (opposite the Singh temple) which carries the Bioplast range. Very high quality and very high price.

I think a 4×2×2 with cabinet and wooden top cover and lights (I think so) would be around $500? best to pay a visit to NA and check out the merchandise.

Clementi 328 is OK but them have a very broad range.

Thanks, think I'll try the Clementi place as its nearer. $500+ for the tank, not yet count in the Eheim ProII 2026 filter i wanna get.. think I go buy my SB-800 first :bsmilie:
