ehhh.. Ai and Ais lenses are not 3rd party leh :nono:. They are true blue Nikon lenses. Just that they are very old. From the old manual SLR days.

And actually it is funny how there are more Canon users using Ai/Ais lenses than Nikon users...

3rd party as in the tokina 11-16 uwa etc that you guys were talking bout. Not the ai, ais. Paiseh din phrase properly. Funny how ancient nikkors cant meter on nikon bodies while i can mount an ai or ais on my canon with adapter and i get metering and focus confirmation ;) heh. Eh wats the diff betw ai and ais, i know i they're ancient nikkor mf primes though

They can meter in the Dxxx and Dx series. Focus confirmation works for all bodies.

Why the old lenses don't meter with cheaper bodies is pretty much a Nikon company decision. It is the same like how Canon decided to dump the FD mounts in 1987 and forced users to move to EOS. And you cannot mount FD lenses on a canon body now, even with an adapter. It will not focus to infinity. You need to get an adapter with lens elements in it, and will degrade the IQ and you lose a stop or two. It is also the same like how Canon decided that you cannot fit EF-S lenses onto FF canon bodies.

Companies makes decisions that affects users in the use of old legacy stuff. I am just glad that at least Nikon lets us users mount and shoot with the lenses. Even if it means manual metering for some of us.

And Ai and Ais is not just mf primes. There are Ai/Ais zooms too. And if you are interested to know what the "s" in Ais means, I suggest you run it by google.

sounds really alien, really need to read thru carefully.. :(

well, Ai and AiS lenses are much older Nikon lenses which are no longer in production.
If you don't have old Nikon lenses, or you don't intend to get any, this information would not affect you at all. Nice to know, that's all.

The older lenses are really well built, and some of the optics are top notch. Coupled with the relatively low price (most of them, not all... hehehe), they do make a compelling option.

Yes...very well built. However, if Lucrezia is thinking of using them, you will also need strong left arm coz they are metal, glass and little plastic...not the modern mostly plastic etc.;p

no worries, i have a strong left arm, cos im a left hander! :D
