is it safe to carry a dslr on the street?
any subsurb that you will recommend to visit at this time of the yr(winter)
Hi Max,
I juz arrived for a week only so I still exploring as well... Haha. Well I can tell u that it's very cold here in Amsterdam because Amsterdam is flat and near sea and when the wind blows, it's bone-chilling cold!!! So bring enough winter wear bcos it's still the winter season in Feb. Spring will only come in March. Temperature will hover between -5 deg C to 5 deg C now to Feb, I guess.
There are few open-air skating around, u will definitely find them. I think there is one a vondelpark, a very big park.
It's safe to carry dslr around, dun worry. Dutch ppl are very friendly and helpful as well. If u get lost, u can ask them for directions bcos most of them do know how to speak english, which is good. Juz dun go out ALONE wif ur dslr at nite! And dun walk in remote streets!
Opening a big big folded MAP will tell robbers, "I'm a tourist, I dunno where to go. Please come and rob me!" Having a crumpler bag or lowepro bag will indicate that u have dslr in ur bag, which will make u an easy target. Haha. But dun worry... Juz pay attention to ur surroundings.
Well, u might want to visit their red light district but strictly no photography! City centre is, of course, a must visit place as well.
Go to the Dam Square, it's also near the city centre and cantral station and u can see their town hall which is very nice.
If u want to know a little bit the history of Amsterdam, do not forget to visit the Amsterdam Historical Museum as well. Do also go to the rijksmuseum too and the van gogh museum as well! And the Anne Frank museum is a must go place, I guess. Each museum entry is about 10 to 12 euros. But if u get a museum card which u onli pay 22.45 euros, u will get free entry to almost all museums in Holland. However, u muz be below 25 yrs of age. So if are going to more than 2 museums, it's more economical to get the museum card. It's available at any museum in Holland. Take note that the museum card is not valid for the Anne Frank museum though.
Some pic of the museums below for your reference.
Hope it helps!
