I'm guessing this is your sister's child. So it really depends on the intended reaction that you would like from her.
It might probably be a better idea to have a few pictures of different expressions (ideally with some happy faces) and/or your sister's family.
As for the black and white picture(s), perhaps brighten the eyes and face with the dodge tool and pump up the contrast.
