The time you are serious about photography
is when you know you want:
1) a wider lens with the approx lens hood
2) a longer focal length for your telephotos
3) an extension tube
4) adaptors for filters
5) want more specialized filters such as gradual filters
6) a more solid sturdy tripod with sufficient height
7) a powerful external flash unit
8) lenses with larger aperture
9) constance aperture zoom lenses
10) a better and larger camera bag
The list can go on....
When you don't want to learn the ropes you will end
up no where. Buying and then selling away your gear
cost you dollars, and sometimes you have to bear the
pain.
Here are some suggestions (just my personal opinion)
1. Get used gear such as the Nikon 601, 801, Yashica FX3,
Braun 2000, Minolta X-700, Minota SRT101, Pentax Spotmatic I
or II, Practika MTL-50, Canon AE-1, Canon FTB, and others.
2. For $600 you can have a decent tripod such as the
Manfrotto 190Pro or the Slik 400 to go with it.
3. For real bargain there is an excellent starter set from Braun:
The Braun 200 with 28-70mm, 70-300mm, a flash unit, and
even a camera bag to go with it. The whole set is less than
S$480.
The Braun has Depth of Field preview, rugged body construction
and very suitable for those who wants a good SLR set to learn
photography, yet do not have the budget to spend more.
You can source for the above items at your usual
photography retails such as those in Peninsula Plaza and
at Ang Mo Kio Central.

It surprised me why newbies spend money
getting digital cameras hoping to learn photography,
later going back to a solid film based SLR without
regret. However some unique oldies who hates
the bulky SLR turn to the Lomo instead.
