I am prepared to buy a 40D to replace my D60. How does the 40D works with the 580 MKI. Or shall i dive deep and get the 580 MKII instead. Or Simply a 550 will suffice?

40D should be compatible with the ettl II flashes. So there is no problem with 580EX or 550EX.

All Canon EX series flashes (even the the old 220EX, 380EX, 420EX) are compatible with ETTL2.... the difference being that the earlier AF assist in the earlier flashes (like 550EX) won't have the same coverage as the later ones (hence doesn't cover all of 40D's focus points). But flash wise, they'll work fine.

Any whitepaper that i can read about the flash ?
