Whoa!
I read your original post and had many strong reactions. I believe most of my reactions have already been voiced by various people, and I also believe that by now you have cooled down substantially to think rationally and sanely.
I still think it bears repeating that I think your original reaction, in the heat of the moment or not, was totally uncalled for. Your dad's property does not by right belong to you, and therefore, you could potentially feel miffed at not being allowed to handle the camera, but you'd have to shrug your shoulders and make do. The same way if I asked you to let me use your 4040 and you said no, I'd have to shrug and make do.
I was trying desperately hard to figure your age out, until eventually I'd read enough of the thread to discover that you're 24. In no way is this meant as an admonishment to you, or as a sign that things are all fine and dandy with me (they're not), but I'm 24 as well and like Tweek, I find it hard to imagine any contemporaries who think the way you do.
i prefer to move into sports photography, but circumstances dictate that i pull out now.
Again, I'm not saying that my life is sorted enough to serve as a role model, but let's try for something to aim towards just on the basis that "it can be done".
I'm 24. I'm a professional sports photographer. I own an extensive range of professional camera equipment of which a 10D would really represent a drop in the ocean. My dad has never bought me anything photographic, despite channeling insane amounts of money at a university degree that ultimately I'm not using (because it's not photographically related).
This is not some post to show off. But you struck a chord with your age and intended area of specialisation (sport). About there the similarities seem to end. I'm lucky that my dad was willing to let me use his camera equipment when he wasn't using them. Nothing even half as exotic, or expensive, as a 10D. But that didn't stop me from learning with "inferior" equipment (read, 4040) and then graduating to more advanced equipment when I was ready for it and had saved up enough for it. Sure he's not letting you use his 10D, but what I'm saying is, from that point on, you and I are the same. I got no financial help to accumulate the mountain of kit I have now. At least you got a 4040.
Incidentally, if my dad ever reads this, I'm not ignoring the role you played in all of this, and yes I'm immensely thankful!
On a separate note, if you want to have a chat about sports work, give me a shout.
Cool down mate, think about it a moment, carefully. Don't do anything stupid, and if you really love photography, don't give it up.
