Look my 70-300 VR, good contrast and saturation. Fast focus in bright light. And the VR works!! But if your kids are young and keep running around all the time and if you can work with a prime, i would recommend a 85 1.4 (pricey) or a 85 1.8 (lot cheaper).

I think the lenses they are talking about are not the lenses you attach to the body, but the micro lens which is present in the sensor which concentrate the light on to the sensor.

If you think that letting the camera decide which subject you are focusing on then it might be easier. Change your AF settings accordingly to let the camera take over. I have a D80, i never had a problem with using the dynamic focus area setting, but 11 focus points definitely help though.
