Sony A7 II

For those coming from A7 how is the focusing improvement ? For lens like 55 1.8 32. 2.8?

Missing the portability of A7 body.

Sorry if this isn't relevant to A7II, anyone find the FE 55mm f1.8 focus really slow? In normal lighting, it is already pretty slow. In relatively low light conditions, it hunts a lot before locking.

I happened to use it in a studio setting, there are times when the lens just keeps hunting for 2-3secs before locking. This kind of breaks the whole flow when doing a shoot and it is annoying.

Anyone feels the same about the lens?

Nope, pretty fast on my A7II and A7R in normal light. For A7R sometimes hunt a bit in low light though.

Which body are you using and what is the firmware? I recall the same on the A7 before in low light.

Have you tried someone swaying himself in a studio setting where your only light is the light from the modeling lamp? Is it possible to focus?

I'm using on A7 with I think the latest firmware? There's only 1 firmware update right?

Should be 1.10 now. I know it was slow on the A7 prior to 1.10, I would have thought that AF would have improved.

I have a question and hope someone could enlighten me.

I have been using Nikon for quite a while. In Nikon, I can set the minimum shutter speed to go with the auto-ISO when I am using Aperture mode. What the system does is essentially trying to lower the shutter till the minimum preset speed before it increase the ISO in insufficient lighting condition.

How do you set the minimum shutter in Sony A7II when using auto-ISO? In fact, can it be done?

Thank you in advance!

Gosh! This is such an easy and nifty feature that Sony should have put in... :'(

No choice, I will have to use manual mode to workaround this. Hopefully they will have something like that in the future update.

Thank you.

Just sharing that The 55mm f1.8 focuses quite fast on my a7ii and a7s but i have better focus accuracy/hit rate on a7s. Not sure why it is the case.

Yup, that's bad. Actually we have been asking SONY to implement this feature for years. They just ignore...

I have confirmed that the firmware on my Sony A7 is 1.10. While under normal lighting condition (small room lit with 1 light during night), my A7 + FE 55mm focuses well almost 95% of the time. However when I tried to focus on the model making gentle movements with light from 2 modelling lamps, my setup totally couldn't keep up. I mean A7 has hybrid focusing system so I'd expect the camera to focus enough. On the contrary, my friend's 5DMII focus really quickly and fires non-stop under the same lighting condition. Am I asking too much from the camera?

modelling lamps can vary in brightness and we can't tell how bright your modelling lamp is before the strobe is fired. Perhaps the light levels were really too low for the A7II to AF quickly vs the 5D3.

Are you on "wide" mode? I recall that the 119 phase points only work in this mode. However, I don't think it'll be utilized in dim lighting. Also, did you have "face detection" turned on? I find it very useful when focusing on 1 person.

Erm. It's actually A7 vs 5d2. That's besides the point... Maybe I'm under the impression that A7 with phase detection + contrast detection autofocus should be fast enough if not faster as compare to 5D2 with only contrast detection. I might be asking too much. Hahaha.

Err... Can you explain what "wide" mode is? I don't have face detection on because I don't see a need for that. I also read somewhere on the Internet that face detection actually slows the AF down. Not sure how true that is.

haha ok 5D2...actually when owned the A7, i remember the PDAF sensors were useless in lowlight. only useful in good light. in lowlight the AF uses CDAF not PDAF.

Oh I mean the "Focus Settings". The modes are in this order: wide -> area -> single point -> etc. When I have the A7, I remember reading that only "wide" mode utilize the phase points. But as ricleo said, phase detection not useful in low lighting.

I use "face detection" a lot when shooting my daughter at home or in the indoor playgrounds. The lighting is usually not that great but I am using A7S now. Make sure you wait for the camera to detect the face (white box) before you focus. A green box will show that face is in focus. If there is only 1 face in the frame, it's usually quite reliable. Give it a try.

Another thing I can think of is to turn on your "pre-AF" but it's a battery drainer.
