Gentle reminder to check prices before buying pre-owned from BnS

Was at Alan in SLS last week to buy a 24-70mm 2.8L Mk2 full local warranty.....paid cash S$2400! BnS sellers calling preowned S$2400 or near too.... something ought to be done!

There is a guy trying to sell his Sigma 12-24mm lens. Despite asking to meet to test the lens during the day, he has continuously suggest that he cannot meet during the day and wanted to meet in the evening or night. I am a little suspicious of the condition of the lens.

Actually there might be good reason for the seller not to meet in the day... it might be as simple as, he needed to work in the day and only had evening or night being free. If you are serious about the lens or sales, you could ask him to meet you in some place bright and take your time testing the lens.

Bring a bright torchlight. Everything shows when you shine it through the lens.

I know it is not nice, but can we comment directly in the fs thread? We are an open forum and members should share information openly. Saw a few 1D Mk 3 fs, goodness just look at the price range! Prowled 5D Mk3 at more new prices. Can we have some comments from the Mod/Admin.

at 1st, I wanted to get a few item @ bns, but ended all bought brand new. as the selling price @ bns is simply too close for a new copy..

The point here is... do your homework and thats it. If you find the price too high, don't buy, simple as that. For the seller... he/she can try to sell at any price he/she wanted... heck, someone can even put a price tag on a Canon 1000D at 3k and if someone buys it, he succeed, if no one buys it, then he/she will automatically bring the price down, simple as that.

Also, do not automatically assume that a seller is dishonest or what. It might be that he/she does not really know the current price of the item he/she is selling presently and based on the price they paid for in the past... so... lets say, seller A bought a 1000D with 18-55mm lens at S$1000 some time ago, and decided to let go of the camera, giving S$200 off from the price he paid, not knowing that the actual price had dropped to... say S$600 with kit lens. So it would appear very high. That doesn't mean he/she is trying to cheat. If you (as a buyer) are serious about buying the 1000D, you could;

1) PM or SMS the seller telling him/her of the current price of the 1000D. Who knows, the seller could drop the price to 400 or simply hold onto the camera.
2) Ignore the sale and go and look for other sales.

You are right.

However, what about those using the prices at Courts, Harvey Norman and Best Denki as a guide? Are they right or wrong? We all know that these big electronic stores are selling at suggested retail prices. Hence, it is always higher than actual street prices.

Just take this as an example.

Cathay Photo and those recommended CS stores are selling at $849 nett.

No. It is ClubSNAP's policy that only TS can comment on their own BnS threads and no changes are allowed.

ClubSNAP do not allow others to comment on sales thread because some overzealous folks tend to trash almost every BnS threads in the past. Since all BnS sales are between private parties, it is the buyer's and seller's responsibility for the transactions. Sellers have to make sure they do not get cheated out of their for sale items, and buyers have to do their own homework on the items they are looking to buy, just like in any real world transaction in 2nd hand camera shops.

For buyers, if you do not like the price, then try to negotiate. If a mutually agreeable price cannot be met, move on. Sellers have every right to set any price for their items, and buyers have every right not to buy from them.

I don't see if these sellers are wrong in anyway. Like I say, a seller can charge any amount of money he/she wanted. It is up to the buyer to do their own research. Plus... frankly speaking... when I just started out (and not too active in Clubsnap or what) I bought my first camera from Best Denki at SRP price with some cheapo freebies. I have no idea how reliable smaller shops like those recommended here are and I don't even know of recommended shops at that time. Of course after using a couple of months or even immediately later on, and if I wanted to sell my camera, I would base on the amount of money (which is the SRP price) minus some from it, to sell.

And for that... many of you in CS would call me dishonest?

I mean... come on, not alot of people, especially those that are not active or not even a photography enthusiast who simply buy on impulse and later regretted it and wanted to sell their product, they didn't know the different between street price and SRP, to them it didn't matter.

What I am getting at is... don't immediately judge the character of a person, unless you have evidence or actual dealing of him/her. I know I wouldn't and I hope other wouldn't do that to me too. I always give everyone the benefit of doubt.

And taking the example you gave me... if you take a while to think...

The person did mentioned that he got it as a Christmas present. he might not even be a photography enthusiast or even like photography, of course he wouldn't go around asking for the street price of the camera he is selling. So... is that right to actually said that he/she is wrong.
