Sony NEX 5R or Olympus EPL5

I was at HK recently and the guy at the peak station, asked me "Wow! Sony got such big lens meh? (135 F1.8)"

Whenever they sees my A850, they will ask, Nikon or Canon. And most of them don't know Sony got so many good lenses.

But on the street, most are Canon, Nikon seems like lesser nowadays. Sony slowly growing but still, hard to find one on the street.

Anyway, depends on your skill and photography knowledge. I even helps my neighbor, who is using Panasonic, to teach her how to set to a mode which is suitable for her. :D

Not sure about HK... but in Singapore, when on the street... I see huge number of people with Sony NEX and Olympus mirrorless offering... almost more than DSLR (from either Canon or Nikon)... of course I still massive number of people hanging their Canon and Nikon around their neck though.

heh..u have offended some sony users here..

i don't think that we're offended. Rhino is not a Sony Shooter, as you already know as well.

@TS, you need to consider what else you need in a camera. long focal lengths, genre of photography you want to try, etc. that will determine what kind of camera you will buy.

else, you'll be grabbing every product that comes into view

Yep... I am not a Sony interchangeable lens camera user (I do own a Sony compact PnS - not sure if that will qualify me as a Sony shooter though. :) Hehe). I admit that there are tons of features that are available in Sony camera that is not found in other brands - be it Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Ricoh, etc etc. And I simply loved Sony's peaking function and EVF (yes.... I have grown to love the EVF found in many of Sony's DSLT camera.)

What we want TS to know is that... there is no best camera... the best one is the one that he/she will use happily and often. You can have a feature packed system... but at the end of the day, if you felt so tedious to use and left it laying in your dry cabinate all the time, then wouldn't it be better to just get a system that everyone ignored or 'pass by' but you love it so much and you can make beautiful picture out of it?

Our point is... do not discount any brand... be it Canikon, Pentax, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Ricoh, etc etc. All of them did well at what they are designed to do and at the end of the day, it is TS who should decide which one suits him/her best.

Ok but u guys are saying DSLR... So for DSLR cameras, Sony canon and Nikon are comparable.... How about their mirrorless? Which is better?

Btw about my comment it was actually what I heard at one of the camera shops. I have no skills and no experience, I only shoot using auto focus and in Jpeg. I was using LX3 and I love the pics from that camera but lost it, so I'm thinking of getting a new camera... Initially I was looking at LX7 or Leica D lux 6... But ppl are telling me that LX7 sensor is a little bit smaller than LX3, and there are not much differences between these 2 cameras.

So someone told me about Sony RX100 as it has a bigger sensor, 1 inch sensor. Take better pictures than LX7... But then with the price of that RX100, I can actually get NeX 5R, and it has a much bigger APSC sensor and has more potential as it is a interchangeable lens camera. But after that I heard that Olympus makes better mirrorless cameras than Sony and has faster auto.

focusing...bla bla bla...

Think most old birds already explained to you what they know/feel about each brand DC be it DSLR, DSLT, MILC/CSC/EVIL.
Let me explain each naming first,

DSLR - Digital Single Lens Reflex, come with mirror reflecting TTL optical viewfinder.

DSLT - Digital Single Lens Translucent, come with translucent fixed half mirror, no optical viewfinder, but a EVF Electronic View Finder

instead.

MILC/CSC and EVIL- Mirrorless Interchangeable-Lens Camera, Compact System Camera, Electornic Viewfinder Inter-changeable Camera. As naming suggestion, some MILC/CSC does provide optional EVF, where EVIL will come with built-in EVF.

Since what you have heard was from salesman point of view, I'm gonna to explain accordingly so you will not be confuse more. And since you are more interested in Mirrorless CSC, I'll just touch base on this type of DC.

Sony NEX-5R,
Auto-focus - Good auto focus speed for APS-C format, as it come with dual phase and contrast focusing sensor. For even faster auto focus speed, you will need the bulkier Sony SLT camera as they are using translucent fixed mirror thus allowing faster auto focus especially in video mode.

Touch screen - Although not too responsive, but it is ok speed for menu access. If you do a lot self portrait, then the flippable to face you tilt screen a plus point. The screen also not bright enough, so under some sunlights you will have hard time seeing thing clearly on screen.

Menu - There's some people feel Sony 6 icons based main menu not ideal for fast menu acess. You'll need to click onto each icon before you are able to see what features hide in this icon. Sony SLT camera might having better tabs + rows menus, but lack of touch screen slow down the menu access. For me, tabs + row based menu + touch screen will enable much much speedier menu access.

Hand grip - Sony NEX camera having a hand grip that was a bit too close to lens for comfort grip. If you have bigger fingers, then it may pose less desire comfort and gripping.

Sony RX100,
It's a good camera, but as youself already mentioned, it has a smaller 1" sensor. So given same focal length and aperture stop, it has larger depth-of-view range than the one with APS-C sensor camera. So it may not fit your settle for 1 camera at 1 go desire.

Olympus EVIL or MILC camera,
Yes, with the helps of M4/3 smaller sensor and lens, they do have faster auto focus than others. It's good, but it might meet your bigger sensor in small camera body desire.

Btw, if asking forumers on which brand camera is good, you will surely invite something that not to your original intention. As such, I don't want to make any further conclusion here to avoid any unwanted attention. Do pm me if you wanted more discussion or recommendation.

Huh? rhino123 sorry and no offence, maybe you should remove those "there is no best camera" words.

They sound contradiction when you added those later words "the best one is the one that he/she will use happily and often".

We are picking on language now, are we? What I meant is... there are no best camera, in the sense that Canon is not better than Nikon or Nikon to Pentax or Sony or Olympus or... you get the point. The best one out there is one that TS would use and like. I don't see any contradiction here.

There is no "Best Camera" in the world. The best camera is up to the user's preference and usage.

Sony : limited lens, good for manual lens (with adapter), better grip
Olympus : wiiiiidee range of range

IQ is on par..
AF almost similar...

so, just tested and you have to know what "you want"

that's it...

*my 2 cents*

My bad, wasting your time. Sorry.

i take offence at being called "Old"

:angry::angry::angry:

It's "old birds", not "Old". Common... you know what I mean.
Unless you're a foreigner, not local/Singaporean, then sorry.

Yes, kei knows what you mean, but you obviously need to develop a sense of humor.

Yes both Sony and Olympus are good cameras. All cameras are good, if it's not good they won't manufacture it.

But does anybody knows which one their colour is more saturated?

All the cameras have options to turn up or down the levels of saturations...

as for level of saturation, i feel that Olympus' color is more saturated.

Oh pardon me. I didn't know that nowadays putting 3 angry face actual mean humor. So,

1 angry face = humor,
2 angry faces = very humor?
3 angry faces = very very humor?

Am I right Senior Rashkae?

Hello
I've used both sony NEX 5R and Olympus E-PL5. In terms of colors I really like sony NEX 5R with Zeiss 24mm F1.8 prime lens in terms of color, it's very vivid compared to Olympus kit lens the 14mm - 42 mm. Even the sony RX 100 color is more saturated than the Olympus E-PL5 kit lens. I've used the Panasonic leica 25mm F1.4 on the Olympus but I didn't do direct comparison with the sony. The lens is much better than the kit lens though. If you want to know more about the 2 cameras can add me on fb my email is hairy_bug@hotmail.com
