ok la bro, GRDIV now black one $390 cash, seems like a pretty good deal, if you shoot mostly in daylight and like the large depth of field for small sensor even at f1.9. Dont get caught up in the big sensor craze.

Yup, better wait for the new one. I bought a GRDIV when it came out but I would definitely not buy it now, a 1/1.7" sensor just doesn't cut it anymore. A cheaper camera will do just fine if you don't need more.

I guess that makes Panasonic and Olympus the losers since the LX-7 and XZ-2 still use 1/1.7" sensors...

That doesn't make too much sense. ;) They are a bit older and cheaper. I rather spend more but that's just me. Based on my experience with my beloved GRDIV I wouldn't buy a 1/1.7" compact camera in April 2013 anymore. Back in 2011 there was nothing really better available in that size.

Where is it selling at $390?! Sounds like a steal even with the small sensor. The drawing of small sensor cameras, with it's enormous depth of field is very different, and provides unique pictures large sensor cameras might not b able to.....

I saw that black color one at TK Foto @Funan at around that price (cash & carry) last Wednesday night. Now might be even lower if they still have stock, I guess!

Can I just check with you guys.... What makes you attracted to the GRD IV? I see many positive responses here and decide to check this cam out.

This is not a wet blanket thingy but really innocent questions.... Cos I checked the specs and it has no zoom, not exactly the widest aperture available at f/1.9 (many zoom compacts can match this or even better), and it's sensor size is the same as many mid-level compacts. And also, it's not exactly a slim camera.

Was surprised at the very high initial release price!

Is it because the image the GRD IV can produce is better compared to other digicams?

For me, I wanted to get a compact camera to complement my NEX6, and also for my mum to use for travels, now that she's retired. Previously I gave her my gf's GF3 to use for a trip and she has problems even with auto mode. She's really the tech idiot kind and for whatever reason she pressed some buttons which messed up the auto settings, causing many of her photos to be ruined (like handheld night shots at base ISO). So I wanted to get something that is small, produces decent image quality (by that I mean at least a 1/1.7" sensor), has full manual functions and yet is also auto friendly.

I initially wanted the oly xz-1 or pany lx5, but they are (slightly expensive) and not as slim. The major turn-off was the lens cap. While I'm used to handling lens cap, it may not be intuitive for people like my mum who might end up losing it. So those are out. Also considered the canon powershot S series, but the zoom lens is slow at the tele (which I assume that even at the wide end, it ain't that sharp and good; that's just my own weird thinking). the GRD4 has a fixed prime lens, which would mean it's optimised for its sensor, and judging from my mum's picture taking style, she has no need for a zoom. The design is simplistic and very user friendly. Mode dial is locked to prevent accidental switch of modes. Fast aperture coupled with a not bad IS means less blur pics for my mum. The macro mode is also awesome. The hotshoe also means I can use triggers and ring flashes for macro photography.
