Fujifilm X-E1 APS-C vs Sony NEX 6

Dear all,

I have read multiple reviews pertaining to the above mentioned mirrorless cameras but still have trouble deciding which to purchase.

Could users kindly feedback on their experience with each of the systems and their preference please?

Furthermore please advice which would be the preferred camera if I will be using the camera mainly for street and travel/landscape photography. no sports photography.

Both are excellent, really. Best to go to a shop and see which feels more comfy in your hand.

Not sure of Nex-6 but understand that its a very good camera... good range of lens readily available now. As for XE1, got it a few weeks ago, never regret. Good IQ, if not I will say its unique in its own sense... see dpreview and Fujifilm forum.

Built quality of XE1 is superb, solid in your hands. Retro look and usage with aperture ring and shutter dial instead of the nowadays conventional mode dial. AF of course not that fast as those DSLR but all within a matter of a sec or plus a very little...

Fuji coming up with a wide & tele zoom lens this year... hence the range is increasing...

If you are not using for sports, it should be quite ok but I did took a few freeze shots of moving cars, so far the AF continuous is working well.

Though for concerts the white 5N is still best. Does not "look pro" so the sistic goons ignore it.

This more or less shows the strengths and weaknesses of each camera. However, it is still more impt for you to feel and try both cameras.

I own a NEX 6 myself and IMHO I find the winning point of NEX 6 is the focus peaking mode. Makes manual focusing a hell lot easier :bsmilie: Otherwise I would prefer fuji X-E1 for its superb image quality. You may also want to consider the difference in price between the NEX 6 and X-E1 as well. NEX 6 is a lot cheaper compared to the X-E1 (around 500 dollars cheaper for camera + 1 lens kit IIRC) when I bought the NEX 6 as well.

Having said that, nex6 takes pretty good stills too, and is so much more versatile c.f. xe-1. Definitely better for streets and travel.

I disagree in d ease of use part. X-E1 is so simple to use like any Leica M bodies.

By ease of use, I mean things like auto settings and pointing to shoot. From a compact upgrader or first time shooters, nex is definitely more newbie friendly, albeit just by a little. And Leica M is definitely intimidating for a noob. To quote leica M to a noob is abit off right? What's easy to you may not b easy to someone who wants to get started in digital imaging.

Oic. I mean d ease of use to set some of d common settings r easy wif d Q button. Shutter speed so accessible n Aperture setting is on lens. actually quite easy to learn these basics on this camera. Once u set d iso to Auto 6400, u just need to set on lens d aperture n use d shutter speed dial to set d speed. I'm a noob by d way, doesn't really intimidate me.

it comes down to what you need. for pure stills work, i think the X-E1 wins, with that X-Trans sensor and its superb image quality. if you will be shooting a lot of video, the NEX-6 will suit you better. AF performance, i'm not gonna say which is best, coz although the NEX-6 is probably faster, unless you're constantly shooting fast-moving subjects (especially moving subjects in low light), the AF speed difference will not be an issue, IMO. Like others have said, if you want versatility, the NEX-6 does a good overall job, in video and image quality, and performs very well overall. If you want pure image quality, the X-E1's got it, and also performs very well. The handling part of it, go to a store and try each one out. Then make up your mind! Good luck

Thank you for the advice. After going down to M S and trying out both cameras personally, I have decided to go with the Fuji XE-1. Been really pleased with the image quality!

Would like to find out, does anyone know of any good camera inserts so that I can put the XE-1 into my travel bag without having to worry about scratches? I have been looking at the Crumpler Haven (S) and Onabags The Roma.

If you are mainly using it as a one lens setup, and not going to use a dedicated camera bag. I suggest getting those soft covers. Optech has a few. Or generic ones u can find on ebay or Qoo10

Thank Thoth, the 35mm would be a prime equivalent right? Not too sure how much that would cost as i'm just starting out? I'd be heading to South America come end March and hopefully the 18-55mm kit lens on the XE-1 would do justice.

With regard to the bags, I need something that is water proof/ water resistant as I'll be having boat rides in the amazon river and there might just be a slight possibility that my bag gets wet.

U will need the 35mm f/1.4 XF lens if you want to justify the awesome X Trans sensor on your X-E1. Tack sharp and creamy Bokeh, good for street and up close portraiture shooting. 18-55 is a versatile lens and Fuji made a very good one but still cant match XF 35 on the sharpness and Bokeh aspects.

Do U need a truly fully water proof bag? One good one I know would be Wotancraft bags, the specially made inserts is totally waterproof and even if your bag drops into the water, it will float and no water will seep into the camera gears within the inserts. I am not into such extreme situations so I am just using the Billingham Hadley Small, enuff to be water proof from the rain. Cheers.
