Nikon 35mm 1.8 slow focus

I don't think it is slow at all. But it is certainly slower than the 24-70mm f/2.8. You can go for that lens if you really need to speed.
was wondering at what distance you try to focus the toddler
minimum focus for nikon 50mm 1.8 is at 0.45m anything nearer it will not focus and makes it look slow
You referring to the movement of the lens elements being slow, or slow to lock-on (i.e. 'hunting') ?
If hunting, perhaps your subject is lacking in contrast for fast and reliable AF-lock. Or your subject moving around and you were in the wrong AF mode. Best to eliminate the other possibilities of error, before jumping on the blame bandwagon.

Is Nikon 50mm f1.8G any faster ? Thinking of getting that.
I haven't tried the 35mm, but I have the 50mm 1.8g and it's great for my kids!

There are many forms of AF system, some measure the distance and set the lens to the correct distance then they shoot (old AF point and shoot film compact camera) another type is using contrast of the image to determine whether is it focus or not (dslr) this is why a plain white wall and dark situation may cause your camera to hunt.
Last but not least is that most lenses has a minimum focal length which means that the lens can only focus subject that is further than the minimum focal distance. Any thing less than the lens cannot focus and this will also cause hunting to the af system (to solve this get a macro lens or adapter to reduce the minimum focal length)
If not wrong 35mm f1.8 minimum focus is 0.3m which is roughly 1 arm away.

your arm so short meh?
30cm is really very short leh. I think my fingertips to my elbow already >30cm. And 30cm is measured from sensor plane, so from front of lens it's more like 23cm or thereabouts.Ahhh I see, then perhaps the 35/1.8 really doesn't focus fast enough to meet your needs. haha sorry my bad need to explain more yeah I does not have very long but always use this to judge, holding cam in one hand while stretching out the other. by judging the distance from cam to subject is from fingertip to elbow distance from eye to subject is about 1 arm length
