Recently, there has been a high rate of teens buying dslr cameras. Do you think they are really into photography? moreover, those cameras were paid by their pitiful parents.
These bunch of teens would look at a website with pretty pictures and feel like they are in love with photography too. I really want to know what everybody think about this issue. It is driving me nuts. These people with no passion, insulting our passion.

And you care because you shoot to lay claim at being a passionate photographer?

Passion is not about sitting around online and complaining about teens, and you don't need to shout it out loud from the mountain tops. One's passion has little to do with anyone else.

I can't help but feel that you care too much about your ideal of a photographer - some of these teens will grow into good photographers, passionate photographers who will probably do way more than you and I. So there's John who is doing it to get the chicks, Joe who's doing it just to yak loudly about L lenses and how pro he is because he's got the newest camera. So what? There's going to be Jim who eventually becomes a world-famous wedding photographer, Jed who conducts workshops for people from all around the world. What do you care about what other people do, does it affect you that much? Then you can't be so passionate after all. :)

Its the determination and the love for what's around me. However, these people hardly have any passion.

And your passion is based on loud proclaimations online, it seems.

How do you know they have no passion? You have a built-in passion meter? :bsmilie:

It is never good to over-generalise, and that's precisely what you're doing.

My suggestion is - if you are really a passionate photographer, heck care about what people are doing, especially if they don't get in your way, and concentrate on being a passionate photographer. Shoot what you like, shoot until you get tired of it and stop and start again after a while when you start longing... Stop sitting around looking at teens and harping on about how "they got no passion" in your mind.

Yes I agree with you fully.

Anyone who is under 20 should not have a dslr to play with.

They should be given this instead:

I'm a teenager myself. There are many ways I can tell when they dont have that passion for photography and that they only got the camera for reasons.

I just feel pressured because when I started photography, I had to built up everything myself. But for them, they just get what they want instantly because their parents would get them anything.

However you're right, passion is definitely not about procrastinating on the internet. I've just felt so disturbed by this issue that I want to know how others feel about it.

Definition of photographer per Wikipedia

A*photographer*(from*Greek
*φωτός (photos), meaning "light", and*γράφω (graphos), meaning "I write") is a person who makes*photographs
. A professional photographer*uses*photography
*to earn money whilst*amateur
*photographers take photographs for pleasure and to record an event, emotion, place, or person.

I ask you, does it mean that Person A work hard for his gear, means he will be a more passionate photographet than Person B who had all his gear given to him?

It is not a given... I know people from rich families, camera given to them by papa and mama, they take the effort to shoot, shoot well, and take pride in their shots. I know people who worked hard for their gear, end up spend half their photography time shooting very bad shots of XMM. So tell me, who is more passionate?

Looks like envy and jealousy in play here.

If somebody has passion, they would fight for it. They would save up all their money to get themselves a camera. While some would rather sit there and wait for a camera to be given to them.
The only reason why someone would save their pennies for what they want is because they have the passion. The passion that drives them and pushes them on.

You are right, some from rich families can definitely take better photos and those that save up their pennies can't. However we're discussing about passion here and not skills. If a poor person saves up his money just for a camera, he might not have the skills but he definitely would have the passion.

hmm, does having more teens buying DSLR make u less of a "photographer"? whats the definition of photographer to you?
someone who owns a camera and takes photo? someone who takes photo for a living? someone who takes good and professional photos?'

if I'm really passionate, and my family is doing well enough to get me a DSLR, why not?
do I have to be a racer to get a sports car?

if people with no passion gets a DSLR insults your passion
I believe all racers, fashion people etc, are insulted by those people driving sports car, and carrying branded stuffs...

yeap!
more people buy, means bigger market, means cheaper goods!

Rich people with sports car. Do they really love the car? Or are they buying it for the sack of looking cool.
Fashion people. Branded goods. Same as cars, they feel superior when they own one.

Cameras. Do they really have the passion for photography? or are they buying it to look good especially when they are camwhoring with their friends.

i'm 15, and i camwhore with a Sony Fullframe. if you ask the Randomers who've seen my shots, i wonder if you can classify me as a person who knows his gear, or as a camwhoring teen.

peace!

by the way,

don't judge a book by its cover.

it's not the gear that matters, it's how you use it.

and why are you so angry at them? do you have the skills to make that proclamation?

or is it as deadpoet said: Sour Grapes?

It probably is. I'm not too sure myself as well.

"When I grow up I wanna be a skydiver!" Go buy latest skydiving equipment. The works. Cue in skydiver rage. "You are an insult to skydivers!"

See how ridiculous that sounds?

To borrow loosely from World of Warcraft, less QQ, more pewpew.

So they bought a DSLR, funded by their parents. Why does that bother you so much? Everyone gets into photography for different reasons. For some, it's a way of life. For others, it's a hobby. For others still, they just have to have the latest gears. You as a photographer are defined by the pictures you take, your thought process when you take pictures, etc. You are not defined by the gears you own, or how you got them. They are merely a means to an end. So why are you getting annoyed by people getting the same tools?

I work in IT, with photography as a hobby. I don't think I'll be able to share the same amount of passion as several other people here, I'll be the first to admit that. Does that make me any less "worthy" of picking up a DSLR? I don't think so. If a person decides to buy a computer and proudly declare "I'm gonna be a programmer!" would I feel insulted? Hell no. It's his decision. Whether he follows through or not is of no concern to me. If he turns out to be a "bad apple" does he give me - as a programmer - a bad name? I don't think so. I will let my skills do the talking for me. In the end, it is he who has lost something, not me.

You're a whore. 'Nuff said. :p
