What is a reasonable first DSLR to get ? My budget is below 1000, or maybe a lil' above that :/

Read the link Octarine posted. There are lots of models in your target price range, some with more features, some with less. You need to make up your own mind, it's your money.

The link helps:) $1000 is pretty ok for a beginner dslr. Don't just go for the brand, look at the features. Usually the most popular brands have the least features on their beginner dslrs

wait, what? the popular brands have the least features? then why are they popular? lol

It's all advertisement, they make great mid-range and above DSLRs but the entry level ones are just disappointing compared to other brands. I'm a nikon user but I won't ask my friends to get nikon's entry level cameras.

Marketing and the "Only these 2 brands are pro" herd mentality.

errr.. i decided to buy 1100D coz I thought canon would have good entry level camera...:embrass: .. so which brand is actually recommended for entry level??

Have you read the DPreview review? Even they recommend looking at other brands as well. In the price category of the 1100D, Nikon, Sony and Pentax offer much more "bang for the buck" and even more features.

Like this:

"The Canon EOS 1100D is a solid entry-level performer but doesn't offer anything out of the ordinary. The image quality is decent, it's easy to use and beginners will find their way around the user interface pretty quickly. However, as usual it is worth having a closer look at other options in the market as well.

The competition in the entry-level bracket is fierce and some rivals offer arguably better specifications at very similar price points."

There's nothing wrong with the 1100D - it *is* a good entry-level camera - just that for the $$$ you can get much better features elsewhere.

Nikon doesn't offer the AF motor and bracketing for the entry levels, a bit of a disadvantage there

hmm, yeah somebody did mention pentax to me, but just that I never heard of the brand.. Is sony userfriendly? Never liked their point-and-shoot so didn't really check on their DSLRs..

Why not go and try them out at the shops? Test out the handling for yourself

are you referring to the lens? so for k-r the packaged lens already has the AF motor?

Actually only nikon have the AF motor issue, the rest of the brands are ok in this aspect.

thanks spree and rashkae, will do more research now. and rash thanks fo the review link =)

@OP, sorry for highjacking your thread =p

well, you can get pentax , reasonable price . i do own one.
but it up to you to decide. get more research. price, service and lens.

cheers..

competition at the entry level is so intense that pricing and specification are more or less similar. An important point to note when buying DSLR is that you are not merely buying a DSLR, but essentially buying into an entire system; which have different level of peer and professional support.
