40D Main Dial not working

Hi Guys.. need some suggestion....

I have about 3 yrs old Canon 40D.. recently found that the Main Dial (the one which controls apperture in AV mode, and shutter time is Tv mode) is not working.... it seems that the rubber on the top of dial is slipping, because if i press it a bit hard, i can get it work.

Checked with canon service centre, and they said it'll cost about 100 dollars and a week.

Any suggestion, where i can get it done faster and/or cheaper.

Ask CSC for express service... more expensive but definitely faster (if they have the spare part). I just got my shutter replaced the other day, I bring my 40D in at around 930a.m and CSC contacted me at 1400hrs the same day (but it cost me S$2xx).

Another place you can bring your camera to was P&G Photographic Centre (No.1 Coleman Street #B1-04, The Adelphi. Singapore 179803. Tel: 6837 0696). They do repair cameras... not sure if it will be faster or cheaper though (I guess it should be), I used their service once to get my sensor cleaned... quite good service... got the camera back in less than half and hour.

Tell u wat, get urself a superglue, use a toothpick and dip some glue, the use your fingernail and pry or lift the rubber dial then apply the glue under the rubber. Just a little will do. After it drys, turn it abt 180 degree and do the same.

Be very carefull otherwise u end up a hugh messy.

That's a nice idea... can give it a try..... lemme see.. hope it doesn't require very fine work..

have the same dial prob on my 40d. plus the infamous shutter release problem which i sent in to csc a year plus ago and yet it keeps coming back.

My solution? Bought a 2nd hand grip. only problem is it feels alittle ackward when shooting horizontallly and the weight

Anyway, it seems like a wear and tear issue. I handed my camera to the officer, all she did was to bring in to the tech and pour something on it.

After that voila, everything is working fine. According to her, there might be some dirt trapped inside. Fortunately for me, no repair or service charge is required.

The first time I went to CSC for this issue I was told that the dial works on friction. So the thing they pour is some degreaser. However, as you have mentioned, its a wear and tear issue. Chances are the teeth on either side has partially worn out and your problem might soon persist.

CSC sure knows how to earn money... Replace one mode dial can cost 200 dollars...

It could be just a poor contact on the switch since you mentioned it works when you press it a bit hard.

DIY tip:
The rotary switch is easily accesible by simply removing the back cover.
There are a total of 5 screws: 2 at the bottom, 2 at the top (near the viewfinder) and 1 hidden under the rubber grip (top right-side). Just be extra careful with the 2 flexible cables.
Once back cover is removed, a drop of contact cleaner to the rotary switch could solve the problem.

I got back my camera from CSC. Its $153 for replacing the dial assembly.

Collected back my camera from CSC feew days ago. They reported that dial has been changed FOC. Since it as FOC, i really didn't bother to ask why/how. Just took my cam and return happily..

Finally they charge S$139 for shutter replacement, fixing the dial (they said no need to replace), clean sensor & viewfinder, clean and focus check 1 lens.

And I got another tip from them, if ur lens have somekind of white stain in the rubber part, u can clean it with WD-40. I tried and it's clean as new

There has been some debate on the use of WD40 on lenses and cameras in one of camera repair forum.
But one thing I don't like is the distinct smell of WD40.
And also because it contains some sort of grease, I'm not so sure if it will attract more dust and dirt to stick to the rubber
