Wah, recommend such exp camera. Lol..........

Anyway, like what others had said, I feel that Sony A33 can be a good start for you. If you can wait, perhaps u can wait for Canon EOS 600D with a swivel LCD.

you can consider the m4/3 cameras like olympus' PEN series or panasonic GF1/2. They can produce good quality photos that you crave for. You can add external flash or attach fast lens too. Not any cheaper than entry level dslr but the smaller size makes it easier to carry around so you can camwhore anytime you want too. :bsmilie:

Sounds TS is the next candidate for the 'I feel bored after 2 months' thread. DSLR is really the wrong choice for 'camwhoring'. Seems he just fancy some gadget for facebook freak pics (aren't there enough already?) and doesn't want to learn too much along the way.

You can consider GRD from Ricoh, light and good.

I think what the TS wants is the almost instant capture ability of a proper DSLR. The drawback of many of these supposedly improved mirrorless cams are still their relatively slower capture rate as compared to the current crop of DSLRs. Even entry level DSLRs from Canon/Nikon/Sony have much faster capture rates.

You're right ^^ But i also have a budget.
I don't mind purchasing secondhand DSLRs.. Ive seen quite a lot of people selling it here, their secondhand ones and am considering to purchase one of the few listed choices...
I actually prefer Canon rebel series.. But i'm not sure if i should just get a brand new 550D or a secondhand one..
Considering that I already have a compact Samsung cam at home.. :/

&&& i don't really need the swivel screen.

Ok, actually, I need help in choosing Canon 450D/500D.
Which would be of more worth for the money?
1) Might be getting a secondhand one (or maybe a brand new one???? I don't know, help me decide.) -- I have a budget. But then again, warranty is important for me. I can't seem to take good care of things :(
2) I don't really need the video feature, considering that I already have a Samsung compact cam.
3) I just want clear pictures (compared to compact cams) for taking photos for family events and such.

I don't need a superb one, that has a swivel screen or anything. :)
Something user friendly for a petite teenager? heh.

if you want a compact camera, good image quality, don't care about the video feature...
just get the NEX.

Nope, i don't want a compact camera because I already have one.
I like how u can manually focus using DSLRs. Haha.

Anyways, i did a lil research on the canon 600D. I've decided to save $ for 600D instead. I love the features ^^

Thanks anyway!

If you want to manually focus, you need old film lenses (not possible for Canon system as the mount has changed since the film days), or the really good new lenses. The kit lens won't cut it for manual focus, the focus changes a few metres from barely a touch of the focus ring. You want to manual focus, you need lenses with a good focus ring.

Just my two cents

If you're the sort to be obsessive and get really into a hobby, then get a really good one once and for all

If not, get a mid-range one (like a d90) used and get Ito the swing of things

I know people who started with d3000, upgraded to d90, then d300s and finally to a d700. Out of all of those, he's still got the d300s and d700, and he sold the rest along the way. And lost quite a bit of money in the process. Told me that he should have just bought the d700 instead of going bit by bit, and the money in between could have bought him at least one of the trinity :D

In my case, if I had ponied up for the d7000 instead of the d3100 back in November, I might not have ended up with a d700 :p

a bit of poison here.. using older lenses with adapters on the NEX gives you that MF kick you need.

anyways... the NEX is not a compact. it's also an interchangeable lens system camera with focusing rings.

if you want to invest in a system, research all systems first. if not, you'll just look at one, buy it and realize that there're better ones to suit your need.

there're also other systems including Olympus and Pentax.

I think you're way off the mark there.
She's referring to full-time manual focus ability of autofocus lenses.
You can't really camwhore with a manual focus lens from the film days.:nono:

The NEX is small, but it has a full-size DSLR sensor, and very very very handy magnification when manual focusing.

Quite honestly, you want to buy a 600D for the "features" when for less money you can get a DSLR camera with even more features. If you want to camwhore, are you going to use the very very very slow focusing in live view on the 600D? You want to spend 1-2 minutes just focusing for 1 shot?

You really should research a bit more.

Not to destroy any high hopes... but focusing with AF lenses is rather a painful thing, unless you invest in lenses with USM focusing motor (which will stretch your budget even more). If you want to explore manual focusing I'd recommend a fully manual lens, e.g. Carl Zeiss lenses. There are older Contax CZ lenses that require only an adapter. No need to get the newer Zeiss lenses with Canon mount.
But maybe you focus on the basics first, like exposure and composition. Let the camera do the focusing, it's fast and reliable. And for camwhoring it's a must :bsmilie:

Then she will need lenses that have ring-type USM. Like the 50mm f1.2L USM. Which are obviously very cheap.

I'm sure there are cheaper lenses with ring-type USM, but they aren't very cheap.
