Outdoor Photoshoot around 8am - 11am, using ext.Flash is necessary or not?

hi..CS'ers..

i got mixed up here :dunno:
this is my first time bought external flash

and tomorrow i will take some photos and the subject is my friend at outdoor around 8am-11am.. so automatically the sun is bright enough right?

my question is, is external flash will help to produce different quality in this case?
which is better? using flash or not? =)

best way to find out? bring it out with you. its not that heavy

you treat your friend like an object, hope he will not be offended.

you can use flash as main light or fill light during daytime, that depends on what you are looking for..

personally, I prefer to keep things simple, find a place has open shade, and place your subject (model/person) there to photograph, hence you will have nice soft lighting and keep your subject comfortable. and you will also have less trouble of metering.

using flash as fill light is when you need to balance the bright background and keep your subject correct exposed, there is not magic setting as you may need to dial your flash compensation base on experience and judging from LCD output, or your personal taste.

using flash as main light is best when you able to do off camera flash, things is getting too complicated for you, and no point telling you now, as I always believe ones should able to walk before you learn to run. anyway, if you insist, Strobist is the best place for you to learn.

tilt your flash upward for a start.
don't forget to put on your diffuser.

Hope it will help for a start.
Flash are good as fill up. to give a soft touch.

sleepies - it is really tough answering a question like yours.

there are many possible scenarios that can happen at 8am-11am...

1) your subject is under the shade
2) it is raining and there is no sun
3) you are shooting against the sun

etc...

u need to understand the need for an external flash..

How to advise if we are not aware of the lighting environment u are u. Like what Pokiemon ahs pointed out.

basically in daylight u only required to act as a fill (to lift shadows and reduce constrast)

At times when ambient is gd, there's really no need for any.

A reflector might be gd enough...
