no have not .
Thats a pretty lame way to weasel out of responsibility.
If you have not made an offer to them, then I would suggest offering to pay for the original service (cleaning) cost (they must have a diagnostic before working on your lens to determine what type of servicing is needed - ask them to dig that out to determine the cost of servicing) in return for a new, equivalent lens (the new 70-300 with USM).
You sent your lens to CSC for servicing to get back a functional 70-300 lens. You were willing to pay the price for the servicing/cleaning to get it. You did not send the lens to them in order to pay extra for a functional 70-300 lens. Make that clear to them.
SO TS, it is 70-300 or 75-300?
These 2 lens have huge difference in value.
I send my 75 to 300 to cannon and they broke mine and tell me to get a new lens from them at 300 dollar for the 75 to 300 III USM . Do you think is worth ?
I REALLY HATE to say good things on Canon behalf ...... but hey, you have to admit that they were honest and forthcoming with you about damaging your lens while repairing it.
If this was what happened, I applaud CSC for honesty.
They could have easily told you that your own wear and tear caused the lens to become like this and their arse luck that the jalopy broke when they touched it .... after all, its a 5 year old item and who knows what hell you've been putting it through etc etc ..... but they did not give you any of this kind of BS
Look, I advise against taking the extreme stand ..... appreciate that honesty and go middle of road instead ..... offer $100+ (dont know what you OK with) for a BRAND new lens replacement w/warranty (or maybe half or 1/3 or 1/4 of what a brand new lens outside costs) ...... which, I hope you agree, is still a whole lot better than a 5 year old cleaned up older lens
