Models/wannabe models please be careful... (Bogus photographer arrested for coercing)

And what is the definition of a "professional photographer"?
A professional photographer is a photographer who generates the vast majority of his income through the sale of photographic images and the use of a camera to generate said images.
a professional photographer generates significant amounts of income with photography. i think for most competitions there is a certain % of your salary being deemed as being due to photography.. you can easily look it up.
It varies from competition to competition, in many the figure is 80%+ from photography or photography related sales (ie stock photography). Some competitions are only open to professional photography.
Nay. I think there are a lot of self proclaim professionals out there.
There certainly are in Singapore. Every second kid with a P&S who has a flickr account has a copyright logo with XYZ photography or such. They think it makes them professional, boy are they wrong. Those in the industry have a good laugh as such wankery.

Accused of sexual grooming

A MAN who was charged last week with cheating was back in court yesterday to face charges of pretending to be a professional photographer and inducing three young women to pose in lingerie and in the nude with the promise of payment.

Tan Eng Hwa, 36, is accused of deceiving a 20-year-old student into believing that he would pay her $700 for allowing him to take professional photos of her in lingerie and in the nude on Dec 30 and 31 last year. He is said to have similarly duped a 22-year-old graphic designer into posing for him in lingerie on April 15 last year, and to have deceived an 18-year-old student into allowing him to take pictures of her in the nude at a hotel last June.

A police statement said that Tan did not pay any of the women after photographing them. He also reneged on his promise to help them get modelling assignments.

Tan, who is unemployed, was unable to raise the bail of $20,000. Investigations are ongoing. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine for each charge.

Actually such act happens in the professional industry as well. Recently, there was a similar scandal on a notable fashion photographer in US.

Best to have an assistant or 3rd party around while shooting these days.

This could happen anyway in any industry...

Accused man'raped woman he met online'

A SYDNEY man who falsely claimed to be an exclusive lingerie "fashion director" allegedly raped a young woman he met online and told her afterwards: "I'll make you a really good model if you don't tell anyone."

Paul Rajendran, 36, was charged with aggravated sexual assault after the woman, whom he had befriended over the internet, went to police.
Police will allege the 22-year-old began communicating with Rajendran, whose MySpace page was in the false name of James Carter, when he asked if she was "interested in modelling". He claimed he worked for La Perla lingerie and she was interested - but also resisted requests to meet for some time.
However, last Tuesday the pair met for a drink, with Rajendran allegedly buying her three or four champagnes at the Tank Stream Bar in the CBD.
The woman has told police she was "at least twice" as intoxicated as she would normally be after consuming that amount of alcohol. Rajendran allegedly walked the woman, who was "unsteady on her feet", to an office block where he showed her photos. Police claim they were printed off the La Perla website.

Feeling "so unwell from being so intoxicated", she asked for a cup of water but when he returned he sat next to her and tried to kiss her.
"I didn't come here for this," she allegedly yelled as she tried to get away.
However, she was allegedly pushed onto a desk and then onto the floor. The woman told police she was crying and unable to fight back because she was drunk and terrified.
On his web page, "James Carter" claims to be 27 and a fashion director.
He also claims to be single but police allege he lives with his de facto and is an acquisitions manager for HGL Ltd.
After he was arrested, Rajendran claimed the sex was consensual and that the woman was sober.
Rajendran's application for bail before Magistrate Allan Moore in Central Local Court will be heard next month.

hope no other girls/models will fall into these type of trap.

Bogus photographer jailed

By Elena Chong

AN UNEMPLOYED man who posed as a professional photographer has been jailed for four years for deceiving victims into posing in the nude.
Tan Eng Hwa, 35, had also claimed to be a model agency owner and duped young women into believing that he would pay them for the photo shoots.
But he never did. In two instances, he even had sex with two young students, aged 21 and 19, after getting them to pose in the nude.
He also admitted to cheating his friend and former colleague Benedict Ho Yew Leong, 32, who transferred a total of $2,000 into his POSB account in August last year to get a loan. He claimed that his 'friend' who could lend Mr Ho $8,540 needed the cash upfront to settle some personal bill first before giving him the loan.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Jeh Yaw said last November, Tan set up an online account with the intention to lure girls on the pretext of a photo shoot and to pay them between $500 and $700 for each session. Tan would ask the victims if they were willing to do social escort services and then engaged in sex with them as a form of training.
Two of his victims were duped into having sex and posed in the nude, while a third had her pictures taken while clad in lingerie. When he tried to have sex again with the 21-year-old student a month later, she refused as Tan had not paid her the last time. Tan then threatened to expose her nude photos on the Internet. She lodged a police report.
