Having sailed the seven seas for the past 95 years and being recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest active ocean-going passenger ship, the Doulos would have hold a special place in the hearts of millions of people, it certainty did for me in a sense it was the first ever ship that I ever set foot on back in the '80s when I was still a little boy.

Unfortunately the Doulos will be decommissioned by the end of this year as it was discovered during a survey conducted during Doulos recent annual dry dock inspection that over €10 million worth of steel replacement, repairs and modifications, taking at least 5 months, will be required to keep it in compliance with international maritime law for it to sail through the 21st century.

Considering that Singapore has the world's busiest port and the greatest density of aerodromes and runways per land area than any where else in the world, I would have thought that there will be a greater interest in aviation and maritime photography among the population. :think:

Drove across almost the entire island from where I live in Tampines to the beach along Tuas South Avenue 4 accompanied by a ship spotting pal and former Operation Mobilisation (OM) volunteering crew member from Germany to bid farewell and pay our final respect to the 94 years old decommissioned MV Doulos.

Currently berthed at Drydocks World – Singapore, all negotiations to sell MV Doulos for preservation have failed and the onetime world's oldest active ocean-going passenger ship will be scrap after its class certification with Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) expires at the end of March 2010.

As can be seen and with reference to the following photos taken earlier, the donated Sea Tel Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) gyro stabilised satellite communication system installed on the 8th of March 2006 and mounted on the aft sun deck had been disassembled and removed along with the forward crane. 120 volunteer crews remain on board to oversee the vessel's final hour.

Tuas Basin shipyards across Tuas View Beach (TVB) along Tuas South Avenue 4 offer plenty of maritime photography opportunities from container ships and oil tankers under construction to 96 years old ocean going passenger ship due to be scrap, and from 20 meters (6.6 stories) tall floating cherry picker to jackup oil platform towering 114.3 meters (31.3 stories) above sea level.
