Hi, I own both 10.5mm fisheye (FE) and 12-24mm, and cover mostly events...

Really like the wide coverage of FE (use it more often than UWA now), but seems a bit unreal at the side. The problem is, I don't want to bring along too many lenses during my assignment :dunno: But still like the creativity I can achieve with FE.

Any users owning both lenses please enlighten me?

Hi, If you use 12-24mm on FF, you will cover 122 degree FOV at 12mm. At 18mm, you can cover FOV of 100 degree and at 14mm, 114 degree. Vignetting occurs to a certain extent, especially on FF depending on the direction you shoot and how much light covers the entire area of view. No vignetting if you shoot from high-rise flat in broad day light afternoon. The popeye, front lens gives a certain amount of curvature to scenery lines at 12mm. What is most desired in UWA is the angle of FOV that matters and as little vignetting and curvature as possiblre.

fisheye is deliberately distorted, i.e. no correction was made for the distortion.

to me, if i use fisheye, i jolly well make sure that it looks better than the uwa.. and that the distortion is there for a reason.

anyways, i am not sure how you cover events with uwa and fisheye only.. if you are talking about spectacular displays like ndp parade, etc i can see why. if you are talking about things like company events, weddings.. a bit is fine. too much is going to just give an entire repeitoire of distorted people.. which can be a bit tired and cliched after a while.

I will have other ranges to cover as well. Just facing some dilemmas whether to cover wide angle shots with UWA or FE. Of course, that types of photos won't come in large quantities as a few will do just to show how's the ambience look like.

Maybe should not be too lazy to bring both, since FE is quite handy.

Assuming your 12-24 is the Nikkor DX, I think you should just invest in a wider lens so that it can double up as a FE after processing.

Yea, I agree. FE works only in certain situation. I guess IF I were to only bring 1, it would be the 12-24. But then again, as a kiasu Singaporean, I would probably bring both, throw in a 18-85 if it is indoor. :p
