My last SLR was a Pentax sportmatic II that I gave up due to the battery for the internal light meter is no longer in production. Until recently my wife suggested that we should have a slr and I was looking for a good Pentax that I can trust only to find that they are now made in Philippines. Nothing against them, they do absolutely nice artwork, but I prefer my electronics to be Jepun, Europe or American. And Nikon are made in Thailand... So I finally end up with a Canon 500d.

Now I found that there are so many function that I do not want(okay my wife will have to live with it). Question... is there any dslr w/o all the XXXYYY mode? All I want is fast FPS, high resolution, aperture/speed priority and most importantly full manual mode.

Your 500D is already as basic as it gets. If you don't want to use the extra modes, then just don't use them.

Thanks for your advice... I'm still hoping there's something around that I can judge for myself instead of having silicon to make decision for me.

Its sad for me to see that the good old shop foto guide is gone, FM2 now.... and those never will happen dream 645 Mamiya and Hasselblad now worth nothing :dunno:

Just use M mode... you decide how you wanna meter. :)

yeah... I agree!
Just use black permanent marker to erase all the other modes on the dial :) Leave only P, Tv, Av, M!

Super glue the dial at M mode.. Just kidding. Use the FM2. Nice piece of camera. Good to train exposure.

Change to Nikon DXXX, DX models... you won't find any XXXYY dials. Only have 1 'mode' button. :-} Can't say for other brands. not familiar.

Cheers!

From what u write, u seems to know abt cameras. So what are you asking? :dunno:There are so many choices out there if you do a search.
The best DSLR in the world is still the same as u are using a old flim slr because how the light work is still the same.

Are you really sure that all the nice Canon cameras come from Japan? The label "Made in ..." is nothing but a hint where the final assembly has taken place. But the components inside come from all cheap labour countries like China, Thailand, Philippines. So what sense does it make to judge from that label? Beside this: All manufacturer give you the warranty, regardless where the camera was produced. None of them can afford big issues in Quality Control. As we see from the recent 5D2 issues about banding and black dots: mechanics produced in China work fine, software made in Japan screws it up. The label made sense as long as there was no off-shoring / near-shoring of production.

I understand your point. After driving an older car for many years it was like boarding a space shuttle when I rented a BMW 525. But then again, all these gadgets have a button to shut them off. Canon 500D has a Manual Mode and after reading the manual you'll find all the ways to deactivate possible automatic functions. What cannot be switched off are the little symbols in viewfinder. It just needs some time to get used to them.
IIRC, the Canon 1D ad 5D series come without all scenic modes, just pure Av, Tv and M.

Well, Sigma dSLR has down to basic functions. It does not have all those fancy menu, just plain vanila. But rather cranky when comes to speed and iso.

My rule book is buy those brand that you can get access to service centre easily. While I may still be bias to certain manufacture origin but bad units can happen with electronics. But if one is not buying the just released model, I guess the bugs would have ironed out.
