Hi all, i'm new to this scene and i've just gotten my first DSLR the 400D.

Im facing one big problem after using it. I found out that i can take clear crisp images without zooming the lens. But however, once i zoom in the lens by a little bit, the images gets blur and can never be as sharp? Even by a little bit of zoom it gets blur already. Why is this so?

The longer your zoom, the more perceptible is any handshake. More so if you are using a long shutter speed. What focal length are you shooting at and at what shutter speed?

just from what you say there may be a few possibilities, here's a couple.

is your focus on your lens on autofocus (AF) or manual focus (MF)? if its on AF then just half press the shutter again after u zoom to get your new focus. if its on MF, then you have to manual adjust the focus ring on your lens according to your new zoom length.

secondly, what's your shutter speed after you zoom in. you see the longer your focal length, the faster you need your shutter to be to reduce handshake action. so lets say you were at 18mm, a 1/20 shutter speed may get a proper shot but once u zoom in to like 100mm, a same shutter speed of 1/20 will result in shake and blur/OOF pictures ...

it's 1/20 and f5.6 and sometimes im still getting a little blur pictures while zooming.. is there any ideal settings if i want to take close ups? im using the kit lens and i know it's really really bad!

What focal length? I"m guessing the shutter speed is too long for you to handhold steadily. With proper technique and lighting, the kit lens is more than capable of wonderful pictures.

yup as asked, 1/20 at what focal length. i presume then since you're using the kit lens 18-55mm, f5.6 would mean you zoomed to 55mm. if so, 1/20 could be fine if you have IS. if you dun, then what you're experiencing is handshake and thats why it blurs. the practice is if your focal length is 55mm, your shutter speed should be 1/55 or more i.e. 1/80, 1/100. however, much also depends on your own technique and amount of handshake so you really need to practice and try out to see if the 'practice' applies to u.
