Hi

I'm looking for a good External Monitor for my XHA1 that I can purchase locally, probably a 7'', and can be mounted on Glidecam. I have checked Expandore website, but couldn't figure one that is good.

To those stablizing fans out there, which Ext Monitor do you use? I believe it is needed for a reasonable good stablizing shots.

Can I also check if such Monitor take the feed via Composite or Firewire? If my A1's firewire is already linked to my memory recorder, what would be the setup for such external Monitor then? ie, how do I connect A1, Ext HDD/Memory Recorder and Ext Monitor together. Thanks and appreciate your advise.

normally for framing purposes on Glidecam you do not even need a HD monitor. Just a 16:9 unit will do.

But I would go for a HD model as it could be used for focusing work as well. Can consider Ikan's monitors but they cost about 1k, 8" and with HDMI, component inputs.
Otherwise even a lilliput monitor would work. Can get from Sim Lim Twr basement

Thanks for the info, will check lilliput monitor as Ikan's price sounds rather stiff. Yes, I prefer to be able to use for both framing and focusing as the A1's LCD is way too small to check focusing on the run. Thanks.

For a 7" or 8" display, I expect that an SD monitor will be fine for focussing, as long as you get at least 480 pixels vertical resolution (some SD panels are only 240).

I am considering getting a Sony FX870 DVD player to use as a monitor. You can reverse the screen so that it lies flat against the body, it has a really sharp display, and the battery life is pretty good. Only thing I haven't solved is how to attach it to my XH-A1. Probably some kind of bracket and velcro but haven't found a suitable bracket yet.

If you need good high end monitors, I would recommend you LCDs by TV-Logic.
Korean brand broadcast grade monitors. Can run with Anton Bauer, V-mount, or other available battery solutions.

Thanks for the suggestions, interesting option. Will kiv this.

Hi Engr

After check both Ikan and Lilliput monitor on website, I would like to take a closer look at the Ikan. Could you advise where can I check it here in Singapore? Which supplier or shops where I can find the models at reasonable cost? Thanks.

there is a disty in Sg for lilliput but i lose his contacts too. Price is ard $300 for 7" i remember. I saw them at the PC show or some IT fair 2 years back. You can call Treasure productions for the Ikan. I know that took in some extra monitors recently.

Thanks. Will checkup lilliput at SLS if possible.

For Ikan, I have checked and realized that Treasure productions is not a distributor, rather they are just another wedding videography studio. I have somehow managed to locate the Distributor for Ikan in Singapore via Ikan's website, its the Media Architects Pte Ltd. Have emailed their for information and quote, hopefully they revert soon.

Guess I will also checkup TV-Logic's recommended by Dixon as another alternative. From the website, they looks good and some of them comes with build-in vectorscope/waveform monitoring function, but their prices are rather steep.

Hi others video experts

Is there any other recommendation for good field monitor that can be purchased locally? Thanks.

Well, basically you pay for what you get. :)
For me, reference monitoring is as crucial as the recording device as well.
I have shot with consumer monitors (and till now, i still sometimes use them), but when I viewed my footage in my post suite with my broadcast monitors, I can sometimes spot flaws which I hadn't noticed on-location with small screens.

Used to be ok with SD acquisition, but when it comes to HD, monitoring is critical.

Thanks for the sharing. But due to my humble budget now, I guess I will look for lower cost alternative to get through most of my shooting now and aim for upgrades in the future when funding gets better. Would aspire to reach this stage one of these days in the future. Thanks.

May I also ask, which distributor in Singapore carries the TV-logic Monitors? I may be keen a take a closer look and know what is its local pricing. Thanks.

Hi all

SmallHD Field Monitor is finally ready for Pre-launch order on 5 May (ref to their website www.smallHD.com). The spec looks impressive, but the price is quite comparison to other similar models in the market (albeit slightly cheaper than the others based on Prelaunch price. Interestingly, just realize that Ikan has reduced their price for their HDMI 8' monitor, not too sure if its related to this launch).

My concern however is that it is new product and not field-proven. Moreover no local dealer carrying it at the moment, so servicing will be a challenge.

Anyone has a thought on this and would like to advise? Thanks and appreciate your help.

very very nice. might get it =)

I was thinking of getting the DP1 as well until i read this review.

Glossy monitor for me is a no no. Hoping DP2 will be matte. Anyone using Ikan here?

From the DVI forum, it seems that SmallHD DP1 has some noise issue with PAL signal, NTSC no problem. Will monitor it before deciding whether to go for one.

anyone using marshall monitors here? care to share your experience?
