Which zoom lens is better?

Hi all,

I m newbies in photography. Got myself the Canon450D last Dec. Am thinking of getting a zoom lens, but totally lost which one to get. So i will need your guidance and advise.

I m looking at Tamron 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical IF Macro AF or Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. But i simply can't decide which to get? Can anyone pls advise me?

Well, if you've read the reviews, then the rest is up to you and your budget. The Tamron does give you an extra telephoto advantage.

From what I read, none of the monster zoom lenses (18 to infinity and beyond) are good except the Nikon 18-200. It would be better to stick to your 18-55 IS and get a 55-250 IS. It's optically as good as 70-300mm IS.

In my opinion, getting a monster zoom would defeat the purpose of lens interchangeability and image quality of DSLR. You will only get a so-so image quality from monster zooms. I would rather get a bridge camera if I need 15x+ zoom or so.

Definitely not true.

Sorry, I should be more elaborate. My definition of "good" for zoom lenses is the IQ of 24-70mm f2.8 and above. Yes I'm a picky bstard

I dun think the IQ of the Nikon 18-200mm is at the level of the 24-70mm 2.8

Not picky enough if you think the 18-200 meets the IQ of the 24-70.

Why are you so dependent on Fred Miranda? Those a USER reviews, thus extremely opinionated. It doesn't matter how bad the lens is, if the users paid a bomb for it, they'll still rate it highly.

Why not read proper reviews, with standardized tests?

Because if everyone dead set on "proper" reviews, nobody would want to buy an A900 or non canikon dslrs? No need to reply, its a rhetorical question.

I'm merely suggesting another site. It's always good to see everything from different point of views, expert and users. It's not good to just buy lenses based on some labtests by reviewers who maybe not even an adept real life photographer. It's always the best way to try out the lenses you want to buy in the store or borrow it from friends who has it.

Actually, if everyone was dead set on "proper" reviews, Canikon would not have as large a marketshare as they do today.
