Why do my pictures *GLOW*?? :(

just bought the HD-digital 0.45x wide angle adapter on my 50mm f1.8 and realised that at big apertures (ie f1.8 - f3.5), the image is glowing!! and auto focusing seems to be a little less intelligent. why??:bheart::bheart::bheart: is it a bokeh type of thing or is it just not so friend-friend with the 50mm? it seems to work well with my kit lens tho.

Now i'm so upset with my purchase because i thought it'd be a cheap way to get wide angle for a 1.8 lens Any help would be appreciated!

Probably you put your lens in aircon room... and water droplets form when you bring your camera out. Try wiping the lens.

thanks for the reply but its not aircon, cos I didnt even on the aircon, and its perfectly alright with my kit lens. Its only when i choose a big aperture on the 50mm that this happens.

This converter is rubbish.
Stop down you lens if you want it to work.
You probably got ripped off by whoever sold it to you.
You should not of wasted your money.

you shouldve done your research
treat it as a lesson, the shop will not give you back a refund.
I would try shopping at the reputable dealers that are listed in many places on this forum.

If it consoles you somewhat, I spent near to a thousand on a 10-22mm and the picture it takes glows too. Sent it to service center and it seems that they haven't done anything to it after 5 days despite telling me i can get it back within 3-5 working days. Started asking me questions about the lens when I called. Well... I guess I should have called on the third day like what I did the previous time. Could have gotten it back yesterday.

Cheer up pal. If it works on your kit lens, maybe try making the best of it and use it on your kit lens only?

Just curious, how much exactly is the converter? Maybe you can take it as a Holga add-on or a soft focus filter. While the effect may not be desirable in normal day to day photos, since you have already gotten it, might as well experiment and see what you can do with the converter.

IMHO, the effect actually looks promising, haha

convertor is not exactly a gd piece of glass. Its a low cost solution. Professional lens have multi-coating, thats why they costs alot more.

Those HD-digital convertors aren't worth more than 40 SGD, but all the scam-shops sell them for 200-300. It's a very very high-profit business.

and no, it has nothing to do wit bokeh (better read up on what bokeh really means). It's just the result of putting cheap-quality glass in front of your finely-tuned lens.

hi ts, since it is not giving clear sharp iq, and u dont want to waste ur $$, why not like others mentioned, take it as digital holga lor, add in crazy pp like urban acid action, u u have it.

as always, newbie, pls do ur research before buying. there are people who will sell u new stuff, some gray some with warrenty, but will give u advice like,

"buy 1st, than test, if you dont like it, sell it," what they left out is u looses money.

try asking more technical questions? they ask u if u r trying to be funny (cause it reviels the problem for all to see), but pls dont fall under the pressure. remember, the money is urs, they cant take it from u forcefully.

above is my personal experience here in cs. be a grown up i will say, do ur research properly, else, dont cry parents.

thank u all for the kind replies. yeah i should have done more research before buying. main thing was i saw how my friend used it on her kit lens and thought it was quite cool, and then decided it should work on my 50mm.

btw it was from SLR PRO @ simlim, for $117 ex gst. my god that kinda money spent (esp for student like me). i wanted to come back the next day with my camera but the guy kept saying its okay, sure no problem (etc etc), anyway got receipt and stuff. oh well. I'm hoping to go back tmr and see if he would do an exchange for something of similiar value. I cant bear to sell to any of our clubsnappers for something like that. well but it does give a nice almost fish-eyeish effect when used on my kit lens when zoomed all the way out.

main intention for it was to take theatre shots (cos i realised my 50mm f1.8 was too cropped for taking an entire stage) but i guess since i cant use it at wide apertures, i cant use it for theatre.

sean: sorry to hear that about your lens. but what is the problem? is it a lens defect or what?

seriously , you should get a wide angle lense instead of using the converters... there are so many choices of wide angle lenses.


to the one who brought the sigma wideangle lense: you have got a faulty batch of lense. it is more than a thousand dollars actually. couldnt you exchange for some other lense?

btw do you any kit lens that is wide angle ? like an 18-55mm or something like that?

for your theatre shots, if you can get a reasonable shutter speed with yr 50mm at f1.8, i think you can use yr kit lens @ 18mm at f3.5 for the wide shots.

(about?) 2 stops slower but it's wider so camera-shake will be less apparent. proper breathing technique and bumping up the ISO will help too.

why do ppl, locals and tourists alike, keep buying stuff from the SLS/orchard road/etc black shops.. if you do go back to the shop, try to bring someone who is knowledgeable about photography and experienced in dealing with difficult ppl. i'm pretty sure if you go back there alone you'll be scolded like crazy or get pressured into topping up more cash for another piece of useless equipment.

im using 30d and my friend 40d. but we using the same 18-55 with IS. well thats why i think its about aperture, cos with 50mm at 3.5 or smaller aperture, pictures look ok.

darren: thanks for tips, will def bring someone who can argue better to go back there. well sls near my school thats why. hmm you're probably right that using kitlens at 18mm f3.5 should work, just not too keen in changing lens there. will see how when my show starts. maybe one day bring this other day bring that. hahahaha
