I dont think tripods are overpriced.. the Stofen omnibounce is overpriced. Wish I had invented it, cost probably 50 cents to make and sold for $20.

For a poor salaryman like me, much as I'd like to get a good tripod, it'll cost me like 3/4 of my monthly pay. :(

Like nickmak said, "Too bad money doesn't grow off trees". :(

photography is for the rich and loaded. The poor should only view the photographs.

come on lahh, everything about photography are overpriced...and that is the way to attract buyers....u pay premium for the brand name, the qualities and also your own ego. leica is so much more ex$$ than a nikon or canon, and u think most eyes could differentiate a different bewteen the prints?
anyway...with the same mentality i still bought a gitzo cf tripod recently..haha.

I wouldn't think tripods are overpriced. For a lower range Manfrotto tripods with a ball head only costs around A$250. And it lasts forever.

This is one of the best investment I've ever made. Before that I was using a few el cheapoes which were useless. Don't scrimp on tripods. Buy the best you coud afford. A cheap and flimsy tripods defeats the purpose of using a tripod.

I think you pay more to get more... It's just that sometimes we think we need more, and thus pay that much more... When we really don't need that extra bit...

Its when you are looking for a Strong and Solid but cheap tripod that things becomes extremely difficult

I added my own version but based on what i consider is cheap.

stable and light tripod not cheap, easy to find.
light and cheap tripod not stable, everywhere can find.
cheap and stable tripod not light, even Ebay/Amazon cannot find.

Was by chance i found my Slik and at $100-ish...its solid, cheap and as expected..not light to carry.

If you are used to carrying rifles and such...should be no problem with the weight.

Not just the tripod is overpriced, infact most of the photography items are way overpriced. Tripod is a matured product which exist for ages and there is no rocket science involve in it. Minimal R&D is spent on improving the materials used, the bulk of the profit goes to the manufacturers' pocket for its marketing and branding. Unlike DSLR, the early adoptors pay for the premium, but for photography accessories, the price held on quite well.

If you ever checked for the price of a Nikon flash sync cap, it cost more than $10 for a small piece of round plastic. ::bigeyes: The same goes to the few strands of wire in the flash sync cable.

Photography is never a cheap hobby , make do with what you have and enjoy the shoot. What we can do is to balance our budget and weight the cost vs value of items and let the market force determine its price as there are always ready buyers who are willing to fork out cash for the best photography equipment. Just like in audiophiles, there are people forking out thousands of dollars for a pair of speakers wires.

Agreed... unless some worthy competitor comes along to slash down the prices. :bsmilie: For example, Benro is a cheaper alternative to Gitzo.

Well all people want cheap and good tripods ma....

Bro,
wif regards to the poll above, the REDS are the poor blokes, the BLUES are the rich kids.
I'm red btw... so everything is expensive..
Year 2000: roti prata kosong 50cent NOW: $1.00
Year 2000: homemade lemon tea 80cent NOW: $1.40 (Katib LiShoon kopitiam)
Year 2000: fishball noodles $1.50-$2.00 NOW: $3.00 - $4.00
Year 2000: CTE got no ERP NOW CTE got 2 ERPs!!
Year 2000: Parking in town $20/day NOW $4-$5 per hour NO LIMIT to how much u pay!!
the list goes on for the REDS.....
Oil prices drop to record lows, banks are going bankrupt daily in USA, but prices in Singapore keep going up: ren ming getting poorer but zheng hu getting richer.
Kiamat menjelang...

Not overpriced. Cost of really exp tripod (800+) is not even close to a say medium range L lens. Though the tripod would probably out last the lens. Buy 1 good one and that's it.

Got a "Fancier" tripod for $88. Tall, sturdy but heavy. Excellent ball-head.

I need exercise anyway...:bsmilie:

Too expensive based on the context that its basically aluminium tubes, plastic and some machining.

The rest of the cost is for designers/artisan(for tripod marker ) 'kopi' time :D

This is a never ending argument. Why much of the world produces stuff in abysmal work conditions, that sells for less than the cost it takes to ship them to their sale destinations. While others work less than 30hrs a week and sells stuff at 'artisan' prices?
Who's fault? Society's fault lah! :D

China Tainted milk case is an example... What materials used and how long can it last?

The thing is it passed through a lot of the health checks that is supposedly made to protect consumers. The fact that it remained undetected till the cases started appearing is scary.

I will stop grumbling. Compare to other hobbies, take Audiophile an example, single cable alone will cost a bomb. ;p
If in that case, photography is just nothing. Well, at least each to their own.
