Dynamic Range for Jpeg

does it make a difference whether u shoot in raw or jpeg in terms of the dynamic range of the picture? i realise that when people post up pics shot in jpeg direct, the dynamic range seems to be not as wide as people who shoot in raw. is it just a case of poor eyesight? :dunno:

It could be the processing engine in the camera. it may not be able to process the contrast as well as when you convert the RAW in the PC.

the thing about in camera processing is that they are just making a best guess according to their algorithms... so they only aka aka try to convert the image into one that looks reasonably contrasty while hoping it doesn't clip to much highlights or shadows... to much dynamic range, and some images might look too flat... to little and the image might clip highlights, shadows, and look too contrasty...

manual control via RAW processing is still the better option to optimize an image...

It makes a HUGE difference. In general, JPEG will give you about 8.5 EV of DR, RAW can give about 11EV if processed carefully. Take a look at any of the DPreviews (I'll pick out a random one, scroll to the bottom, "RAW headroom"):
