haha but none of your stories are even nightmarish to begin with... this friend of mine has so much more exciting experiences.

1) asked for company to buy 4 AA batteries for his own flash to cover an event and was reprimared for not submitting proposal beforehand and incurring unnecessary costs. The event had the budget to cater a lavish spread for the VIPs. The VIPs didnt even touch the food in the end.

2) told whatever photographs taken is the exclusive copyright of the company and the photographer has no claim to the images, even to use it for portfolio. No equipment or training was supplied from the company.

3) told by prominent senior director to initiate a image bank project by soliciting images from volunteer submission of local photographers. Furthermore he is tasked to make sure all submissions be accompanied with a signed agreement by the photographers to waive all rights.

4) told the opportunity to "photograph" allows him to develop his skills and talent when the photographer is already an award winning and contributer to various publications. When informed, the company insists they are special.

5) warned by legal department that he is not allowed to shoot for the company without their explicit blessings. When informed that the management told him to do so, the legal attache said, "Oh." and hung up the phone.

6) told by dinner and dance committee that he is needed to cover the event but he needs to pay for entrance to the event since no one is given a free meal. When asked how he is suppose to eat and photograph at the same time, the committee member replied, "like wedding dinners loh, ask people at the table to save some food for you."

:bsmilie: I have a good laugh whenever he shares his tales
ultimately, just stand your ground and do what you feel is right.

wah, so many horror stories. ok, i wont put photography as my interest/hobby in future job application, not even post processing!

hobby/interest: shopping, movies, lim kopi, sleep, BBB (diff from shopping, shopping doesn't = BBB), read story book... anything but free photographer! :bsmilie:

My first reaction is :bsmilie:, then... Hey, good idea! So what does BBB stand for?

BBB = buy-buy-buy

maybe for a touch of oddity, interest e part can include recycling (anything old). think like the boss, pretend to scroog.

My friend owned a small ad agency. Once he did an ad for an ipod like product. Probably the company wanted to save some money. So he shot his receptionist as the model.

The receptionist is not really a "photogenic" one. So he told the designer to crop of the model's head.

Everytime we see his ad of the girl holding the product with the head cut off we have a good chuckle.

No one wanted to tell the poor girl why her head got cut off.

So never shoot or pose for the company. :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

I do as it is my passion. But if ppl take advantage then I would stop it. So far so good.

Tell your boss: buy the necessary equipment, and you'll shoot. At the end of the day, you keep the equipment in return. Next assignment, pay! There's no free lunch in this world. Unless you're paid as a photographer and taking photos is part of your job, else you are not obligated to do so.

Business is still business. Hobby is another. One of my bosses got a new office and I was asked to shoot. He is from US and kind enough to pay me to shoot the necessary for the office reception area display pic. I think foreigners understand the value of photography. Singaporeans just wanted to make use of us photographers and save cost! :thumbsd:

My annual appraisal was not that good after doing all the projects that save the company thousand of dollars... maybe I should start working at home after work.. and do my main job at office... that mean 8am to 5pm working in office and 7pm to 3am at working project at home... total 16 over hours... then my annual appraisal will be good... maybe I might be one of the cases... work until die in the office until someone notice the rotting smell a week later...

i'm working as designer, and had been helping my company to take picture using my 300D and kit lens & 50mm,

recently my camera had problem. and to fix/ upgrade it will cost me money.
i upgraded to d300 now.. and bring camera to office for after work time shooting recently.
and now they ask me if i can take photo for some office project. i feel it's a nono for me.
and somemore to shoot a night event. tat will require me to buy a sb800 tat cost 450++sgd. why the hell should i do it?
then they ask me if i can borrow from people. damn. right. borrow from him if spoilt who will pay for it?

per shutter is reduce the "health point" of our camera. everyone here would know this fact..

Is it worth it to do these EXTRA job for company with our own investment ?
designer is suppose to design. not photographing.

everyone agree or not? does it happen to you as well?
back to your original question, if you really don't want to do it, the more proactive way is simple say "No", "I'm not good at it".

if you company don't take you advise, and you still don't feel like doing it.

a more passive way if just work within your limitation, just deliver a result just marginally acceptable. of course if you are bold enough, can just simply scr3w it up.

On the other hand, many people are envy the opportunity you have, try to get the change to shoot something, even to the extend of shooting it for free. :)

If want the chance to shoot for free, there is a world of opportunity not limited to this island. :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Or is it big bad bas....?

boss, gender free = either. as for bas.... i would say all male are loh. :)

no wonder we can never get near being a gracous society, blame those bad examples at the top. do the work 1 is employed for, all other miscellenous stuff better stay away. the line has to be drawn clearly. next time if get staff volunteer in old folks home will get request to take care of boss's parents is it?

once the flood gate are open, they may never close. wad is an exception today, may be a norm tomorrow!

Actually there is nothing wrong with the bolded part in (2)

2) told whatever photographs taken is the exclusive copyright of the company and the photographer has no claim to the images, even to use it for portfolio. No equipment or training was supplied from the company.

.. on a side note, how many of your colleagues know about online photo sharing sites about us? for those with above average pics better do some "editting" asap. :bsmilie:

MTL...

Hmm so strange, why complain abt the same thing twice, and even using the same cut and paste wording.
Because........................
