sigh!.. using own camera for company project

i'm working as designer, and had been helping my company to take picture using my 300D and kit lens & 50mm,

recently my camera had problem. and to fix/ upgrade it will cost me money.
i upgraded to d300 now.. and bring camera to office for after work time shooting recently.
and now they ask me if i can take photo for some office project. i feel it's a nono for me.
and somemore to shoot a night event. tat will require me to buy a sb800 tat cost 450++sgd. why the hell should i do it?
then they ask me if i can borrow from people. damn. right. borrow from him if spoilt who will pay for it?

per shutter is reduce the "health point" of our camera. everyone here would know this fact..

Is it worth it to do these EXTRA job for company with our own investment ?
designer is suppose to design. not photographing.

everyone agree or not? does it happen to you as well?

hahaha... just ask them buy u the sb800 then u shoot.. not bad la.. got free flash

Ask your company to hire a photog, or pay for the rental of a flash.

get "camera allowance". explain the concept of equipment depreciation to your boss/colleague. MAKE SURE they compensate you for the time, equipment, and effort. not necessarily 450 for one night shoot, but for a 3 to 4 hour event about $250+ for equipment depreciation. of course, then your pictures must have some standard also la. (btw thats DAAAAAAMN cheap for event coverage.)

don't be too aggressive, remember you work there. :) next time events they will keep coming to you as well then eventually you can buy new lens. hoho.

I spent 6 figures in my last 13 yrs with the company...worth it or not? Well...I get to keep my job and hard for anyone to play politics with me. Camera gear? you got off lucky heheheh... if I show you my list of what I have spent you will faint. We talking computers and peripherals, audio visual equipment, video cameras, 35mm cameras from F3 to F5 to DSLRs, lots of lens and flashes (yes all in plural)....and that is just my design and IT dept. I have not gone into admin or management yet. And I can't recoup it all back.

But if it helps you keep the competitive edge over someone else in the company.....what do you think is fair or not fair? So should you? You should be careful as to how much to give before it becomes a "take for granted" situation. Knowing when you should stop or how much to "contribute" is very important. I think these days they call it "value added" just make sure you gain more value then you spent more value. But it can also go so far before it eats you up or you gain from it. And also how much of what other stuff you do, designing skill, will keep you viable? If someone is better at creative then you and also brings his/her own gear to let the company use..then you are out of luck. Keep it short run. Long run doing this kills...I should know.

Incidently if I resign...I need a small pickup to take my things home..if they are still working or not throw away from being worn out.

haha i also do photography for my company, at client events and internal events.i'm an intern in the PR industry. zzz (no compensation at all) but at least i know i'm getting a good performance review :bsmilie:

i use my own cam for work too, no choice. Workplace has a cam, but lower grade. So it's up to choose personal standard of work (for esteem), use something lower and give less quality work. :bheart:

Mine is King of Hell heheheh......

Care to guess when was the last time I managed to take more then 1 day off work? Try 7-8 yrs ago. I really need a job change. Anyway I don't blame him entirely ...it was my choice. I was also thinking about quality of work...like the other guy mentioned. When the company only get you lousy equipment to use...and you want to do a better job as it reflects on you...thus you get your own equipment. That is why I say..make sure you get some fun out of those things you purchase heheh if not...die.
