Why does the live view in canon 40d doesn't seem to be able to autofocus when i press the shutter halfway, not like what is usually seen in the viewfinder? Do I have to change some settings? Please advise.

You might get better response if you posted this in the Canon thread ...

IIRC, to auto focus with liveview on the 40D, you have to go through a different series of steps not like the usual just press shutter halfway.

Check the manual for the proper steps. ;)

The Canon live view is not like the Sony one. There's a different sequence of steps you need to take, which are documented in your manual. Start reading. :)

First of all you gotta go into the Custom menu option and go to C.FnIII and Enable Auto focus drive during live view. Now in Live View mode, you just press the AF-ON button at the top right corner and it will auto focus.

I guess you got your answer. The 40D is one of the 1st few SLRs with the Live view system so it will be quite troublesome for live view.
