For newbies comparing Nikon's D40, D60, D80

Lately there have been many posts from newbies asking about the differences between D40, D60, and D80.
Perhaps I should summarize what I know into point form below:

D40
1) About 2 years old (2006 model).
2) 6 megapixel CCD sensor.
3) Smallest and lightest Nikon DSLR body.
4) Kit lens is AF-S DX 18-55mm f3.5-5.6
5) Works 100% only with AF-S and AF-I lenses, which have in-built focusing motors.
6) With other lenses (eg. AF), the camera can meter, but cannot auto-focus because of the lack of a mechanical drive pin to turn the focusing screw on the lens. You can still focus manually. A green dot appears in viewfinder when subject is in focus.

D60
1) 2008 model.
2) 10 megapixel CCD sensor (same as D40X and D80 (i think) ).
3) Image sensor cleaning system.
4) LCD auto switch off when eye is looking through viewfinder.
5) Same size as D40 (smallest and lightest).
6) Same issues as D40 with lenses. Cannot auto-focus with AF lenses. However, the 'rangefiner' display makes manual focusing quite easy and quick.
7) Kit lenses are updated from D40/D40X. Include VR (Vibration Reduction) function.

D80
1) 2006 model.
2) 10 megapixel CCD sensor.
3) Larger and heavier than D40/D60. Body has more magnesium alloy components. Feels a bit more solid to hold and operate.
4) Kit lens has larger zoom range (18-135mm f3.5-5.6).
5) Can meter and auto-focus with AF, AF-S, AF-I lenses. Has mechanical drive pin.
6) More functions (image quality, ISO, WB) can be quickly accessed via rear buttons, without having to dive into the menus. Allows quicker setting changes.
7) For those interested in studio photography with multiple flash guns, the D80 can be programmed as a remote commander for Nikon Speedlights SB600 and SB800.
8) Additional purchase of Nikon authorised battery grip MB-d80 allows easy shooting in vertical (portrait) position.

Hopefully this answers most of the basic questions that newbies want to ask about these 3 cameras. If anybody has anything to add, please let me know.

Very useful comparison, good effort !

One point you might have missed out.
Viewfinder
As far as I know, the D80 has a bigger and brighter viewfinder ( using pentaprism ),
compare to D40 and D60. ( pentamirror )

newbie here.
very good summary~!

hope im not asking too much..
but can incl the D70 as well?

coz im looking for a D40, but its hard to find one.
D80 is out of budget.
left with D60/70.

wah.... you very troublesome! :)
D70 is not a current camera anymore. So I shouldn't include it in this list...

Ok just to humour you, here is some VERY BASIC info on D70:
D70
1) 2005 model.
2) 6 megapixel CCD sensor.
3) Similar body size to D80. Feels quite solid and heavy to hold.
4) 2.0 inch LCD monitor, smaller than D40/D60, AND D80.
5) Kit lens 18-70mm f3.5-4.5
6) Can meter and auto-focus with AF, AF-S, AF-I lenses. Has mechanical drive pin.
7) More functions (image quality, ISO, WB) can be quickly accessed via rear buttons, without having to dive into the menus. Allows quicker setting changes.
8) Viewfinder uses penta-mirror, which is similar to D40/D60.
9) (As far as I know) Vertical battery grip is not available.

I think you are still able to buy a D40 from most camera shop. Just got my D40 Kit a few weeks ago at MS color AMK Central. Even CP at Marina SQ has stock for that.

Wow.. thanks for the summary!

I was just about to get my very first DSLR (canon 450D body only as i intend to get a second hand Canon 17-85mm here)) today at John 316 when i got further introduced to Nikon D60. With the current promotion, it is almost impossible to overlook it!

Dual lense with so many other freebies for $1250!

------------------

However, i was told that D60 can auto focus? It can mount only AFS lenses, or was it AF lenses? I'm not too sure! :p

It doesn't work with Nikon 50mm lense because it is not AFS/AF?

After reading this thread, i got confused.

And what is metering?

Got my answers after more reading.. :)

the AF-D 50mm f1.8 can mount on d40/d40x/d60 only have to MF.
MF on d60 is easier than on d40/d40x because of the rangefinder.

d80 where else have no such problem with the 50mm as it can AF on it since the cam body got focusing motor onboard.

i already mentioned this fact in my initial post, under the D40 heading, point #6
"With other lenses (eg. AF), the camera can meter, but cannot auto-focus because of the lack of a mechanical drive pin to turn the focusing screw on the lens. You can still focus manually. A green dot appears in viewfinder when subject is in focus."

relax lah...maybe he never read properly ?

normally most 1st timers would stay away from d40/d40x/d60 after they know the prime lens MF issue.
better they chose canon entry lvl if they cant handle the prime lens MF issue.

but if you want an entry lvl cheap, cannot expect to have the best of both worlds like having that focus motor built in, if so the overall size/weight of the d40/d60 would be bigger/heavier.
want more ? then pay more, beside is the simple logic of what you pay is what you get.

i know the short comings of the d40 before i went for the purchase if not for nikon's low pricing of the cam, i may still be w/o a dslr.
coming from a noisy panny compact cam user, i only have 2 solutions with the image noise issue, 1 is go for a low MP entry cam or i could go for the ex cmos of canon.
besides having friends of the same camp helps as well in deciding which brand to go along with.

I guess that's why a number of people are praising the 400D/450D, coz they don't have this AF issue with their bodies...
Then again, as far as I can remember, 400D/450D are priced above D40/D60.
1000D looks like a big threat though. Nikon better be wary.

well what can i say let them praise loh...
but just dont flame other brands, do keep the minimum sense of respect for other brands.

the new 1000d specs wise really look like an entry lvl killer design to create more sales for canon in the entry lvl.
downside is it may even be a bit more ex than the starting price of previous 400d when it 1st came out.
but since when have canon cmos sensor cam bodies come out cheaply before ?
at least is never going to be cheaper than d60.

like i say before pay more get more, pay less of cos get less mah...

As edited in my post, got my answers after more reading. But didn't get my answers by reading your point #6 though. For a total newbie, point #6 sounded really alien to me, which was why i posted my many questions.

But after more reading throughout some threads, i finally understood.

Simon, thanks for trying to explain ;)

har? sounds alien to you?
oooops... I thought point #5 and #6 explain the whole AF-S and AF focusing issue with the D40/D60.
Care to explain what about the 2 points is confusing? Perhaps the way i wrote? If so, please suggest.

haha..i just bot a used and mint condition d40 with kit for 580 wif mmry card...+ mths warranty too..
