he was unpleasant, but he did save u $$. mayb not e most eloquent sales staff. :embrass:
Wanted to buy a lens hood for my canon kit lens the other day.
Asked the guy at the counter and I got the following reply:-
Your lens is not very good so don't bother, just use it as it is.
The hood will cost $25 but we don't have it. if you want, we can get it.
hmm, well for me i might feel offended ley ;p cause i get hood for all my lenses ............ just for protection wahaha, how the sales person know i use the hood for what ;p
Haha... maybe they're not the most eloquent sales people around but they are the most truthful and straightforward. Most people appreciate that but I guess some people who are more sensitive might get offended. And well, as we know, sometimes the truth hurts.
What he says is actually true, bro. While a hood will in most cases improve IQ, if you don't have a good lens to start with, a hood will not be of much use. It will still improve IQ a bit but the difference would be so small it is probably unnoticeable by the human eye for normal prints (up to 8R).
It's just like, buying a high end cable for low end audio speakers. If your speakers are not very good to begin with, the high end cable would not improve the sound quality by much. Or buying high end alloy rims for a low end car. You get the drift... you're just wasting your money.
Most people would not spend money on a hood for a kit lens because it's not worth it. And yes, you can get a hood for protection and that would cost less than buying a filter. But it is also not worth it to get a filter to protect a kit lens. I hope I don't sound like a kit lens basher here. Kit lens can produce good photos and are not trash. But there is no point in spending extra money to protect something unless it is worth a lot. I did not get a filter for my 50mm f/1.8 lens. It wouldn't make sense.
Would also like to mention this. He did not tell you not to buy it because he did not have stock. I once wanted to get something and he also advised me not to buy it, giving good reasons. And he did have stock of the item and let me see it upon my request. In the end, I took his advice and did not buy it. And I do not regret not buying it. It was a good choice.
Having said all that, photo gear and accessories is a very personal choice. If you truly feel that you have to get a hood for your lens, by all means, get it. Have you tried Orient Photo at Sim Lim? They may have it... or they may have 3rd party ones. Try Cathay Photo and MS Colour or TK Foto or Alan Photo too.
