Wanted to buy a lens hood for my canon kit lens the other day.
Asked the guy at the counter and I got the following reply:-

Your lens is not very good so don't bother, just use it as it is.
The hood will cost $25 but we don't have it. if you want, we can get it.

I was kind of shock as my friend intro me to this shop as he used to go there last time.

Has the shop changed management or something?

All i wanted was to buy a lens hood to block sun light and this is the type of reply i get. shss.

Anyone know where I can get the lens hood for Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens ? been looking around but seems like it's out of stock.

U register a new nick just to post this??:bsmilie:

he was unpleasant, but he did save u $$. mayb not e most eloquent sales staff. :embrass:

mayb less annoying than well rehearsed stock answers or staff out to make a buck no matter wad.

He was just being honest. Not the most tactful answer, but it's good advice. Honestly, for casual use, a hood is hardly necessary.

dude, when a salesman doesn't want to sell you something even though he can get it for you and earn profit, believe me, that salesman is someone you should hug and kiss.

the only time when this is not true is when the salesman is blardy lazy to the point that he can't be bothered to earn anything for his company.

The owner is known to be a humourous guy, every time we are there, it is laughter all the way.

He is just trying to make you feel better not to waste the money on a hood for a lens that may not need one. Maybe you can save the money and then buy a much better lens which will definitely have a hood in it.

They are known to be very customer oriented, maybe it was not the right words at that time which causes irritation to your ears.

Slip of the tongue no fault of the speaker. Take it with a pinch of salt, as the sayings go.

Cheerio

hi & welcome to CS (forgot earlier ),

if u r keen, there r other shops in that area u can go. if they also no stock, den mayb need to place order. den when time comes the shop staff will call. i too went several shops just looking for a lense hood for my Canon 28-135 IS.

as for another 3rd party lense hood i went straight to the agent...

Yeah man..which salesperson will enthusiastically tell you "don't buy, save your money"? Honestly, apart from some lousy lazy salespersons that I've met, no one else has done that yet except Samuel from John 3:16.

hmm, well for me i might feel offended ley ;p cause i get hood for all my lenses ............ just for protection wahaha, how the sales person know i use the hood for what ;p

hmm an older guy at Alan photo gave a similar answer to me once (forgot what was that liao)

but i guess we have to know the tone of the sales person to be the judge :)

Haha... maybe they're not the most eloquent sales people around but they are the most truthful and straightforward. Most people appreciate that but I guess some people who are more sensitive might get offended. And well, as we know, sometimes the truth hurts.

What he says is actually true, bro. While a hood will in most cases improve IQ, if you don't have a good lens to start with, a hood will not be of much use. It will still improve IQ a bit but the difference would be so small it is probably unnoticeable by the human eye for normal prints (up to 8R).

It's just like, buying a high end cable for low end audio speakers. If your speakers are not very good to begin with, the high end cable would not improve the sound quality by much. Or buying high end alloy rims for a low end car. You get the drift... you're just wasting your money.

Most people would not spend money on a hood for a kit lens because it's not worth it. And yes, you can get a hood for protection and that would cost less than buying a filter. But it is also not worth it to get a filter to protect a kit lens. I hope I don't sound like a kit lens basher here. Kit lens can produce good photos and are not trash. But there is no point in spending extra money to protect something unless it is worth a lot. I did not get a filter for my 50mm f/1.8 lens. It wouldn't make sense.

Would also like to mention this. He did not tell you not to buy it because he did not have stock. I once wanted to get something and he also advised me not to buy it, giving good reasons. And he did have stock of the item and let me see it upon my request. In the end, I took his advice and did not buy it. And I do not regret not buying it. It was a good choice. :)

Having said all that, photo gear and accessories is a very personal choice. If you truly feel that you have to get a hood for your lens, by all means, get it. Have you tried Orient Photo at Sim Lim? They may have it... or they may have 3rd party ones. Try Cathay Photo and MS Colour or TK Foto or Alan Photo too.

I'd be more impressed if they have something in stock yet persuade you not to buy. I do not know the store or the staff so I'll hold off forming an opinion.

To the TS : maybe try tagotech? I noticed them advertising a lot here and that they have a 3rd party hood for the 17-85mm ($24).

Ahem bro... to think that your post is just after mine. Read my 2nd last paragraph. They did have the stock and yet advised me against buying. They even let me view the item upon my request... so they definitely have the stock... I saw it!!!

Heh, sorry about that :embrass: Problem with waiting a long time between reading and posting. OK, I guess I'm more impressed with them now.

To TS, I am using the hood for 17-85. If you still looking for the hood, pls do check on wide side, some of the 3rd party hood blocked the corner when at 17mm. I end up buying original one......

I thought the hood is for reducing the chance of flare (and loss of contrast) when shooting in sunlight? Why cheap lens don't need? Immune to flare or contrast already so bad that won't notice the difference?

Yup, the second! Haha

It is ironic actually...
Cheap lens already bad so no difference...
But good lens are already 'resistant' so also no difference...

Haha... actually got lah... depends on lighting situation...
Someone once tried to show me what is flare so he deliberately tried to create conditions with the light and I used my lens (a good one) to take the photos. With the intention to create flare (and this was a professional who used lighting sets all the time so he knows what he is doing), he was still unable to create any significant flare with my lens. In the end, he pointed the powerful light point blank straight at my lens... impossible not to have flare like this! This shows how resistant a good lens is to flare. He had never done this 'experiment' before so he was also impressed.

I had also taken concert photos where they had colourful lights pointing in all kinds of directions. The likelihood for flare in this situation is very high and it would make a significant difference to have a hood on, be it good or bad lens. Just cos the light is strong and direct on the lens.
