Canon is No. 1 in 2007

Yes. :)

It's now rather obvious that lower end cameras are FAR more important in terms of market share.

Agree, it is the lower end cameras that will make up the market share. In many ways Canon has neglected the lower end. While its competitors have come up with a wide range of excellent consumer lenses, not even counting the 18-200VR, Canon has been coming out with L lenses (50L, 85L2, 14L2, 800L) that are priced out of the reach of most amateurs and hobbyists. Its 18-55 IS, 55-250 IS have been relatively late but better than never.

It is important for entry-level people to view the brand as the leader in DSLR technology so that they are willing to pay a premium for the brand. This lead has been severely eroded of late.

the lead is very slender at end 2007 and my analysis is hinges on the idea that once canon loses its thought leadership and technological expertise, it will find it hard to reclaim that space.

it had the chance to put the competition away for good when it had ample share and budgets, but threw away that chance.

aside from the obvious (competition is good), the unfolding drama will be something i'll be following. by sheer corporate size and depth of pockets, you can't ignore that sony will be matching canon every step of the way in DSLR launches - both in sensor/bodies and in lens (with their collaboration with zeiss).

Canon was the sole undisputed digital champion before 2006, dominant in sports, FF DSLRs as well as the amateur mass market. Canon could have "put the competition away for good" except that it went for short-term profit optimization.

Instead of a single monopolistic dominant anti-trusted player, we are seeing a reverse into a Three Kingdoms warring situation, with Zeiss ;p as a mercenary in the Sony court. Hopefully we will see true competition and not the formation of a Cartel. 2008 should be an exciting year.

well well.... marketing strategist wannabes hard at work again......

how would you know if i'm a "wannabe" from as much as I know you're a real photographer :)

definitely a free-for-all mad scramble for 2008. good thing about canon is that basic quality is still there as the 20D was advanced for its time and is still a very good camera by today's standards.

so long as competition is progressive all customers should win. sometimes competition is bad e.g. if all participants are making losses due to price wars or playing off the distribution - then progress will be stunted, actually customers do lose.

Do fake photographers exist to begin with?? Life size cut out of you holding the camera standing by the roadside?
you just made my point - and a "wannabe marketing strategist" looks like ....

Sony having to take over KM's business has a bit of advantage on the market share. moreover, km users switching to sony and buying sony equipment for their alpha system is also an advantage to sony. sony alpha is a new but established system for years by KM.

Sony as 2nd is a surprise.

Always thought it was a fight between Canon and Nikon with Sony as the new kid on the block.

I'm not sure abt FF, but there are many areas that Canon can explore to up their market share.

And personally, i'm into ergonomics....

Right. But wah lao eh, like that Canon might make N**** No. 1 instead, as part of their brand segmentation strategy... only pro bodies and L lenses from Canon.
