Absolutely no (in my opinion) I think if you control your equipments good then you can have good pictures with your PnS, SLR, or DSLR. When you used 1DsMarkIII with the very expensive L lens but you don't know what aperture is so I think it a waste of money. With me, A pro camera doesn't mean good pictures... Use your head and your senses to create the best...

not impossible, but a lot of work

need to carry the cat very very far away from any background, then need to zoom to max and slowly focus from far far away and hope that the cat doesn't get bored and run away :bsmilie:

Badly taken example, haha! ;p

Oei, u guys dun get carried away with the comparison of the pic leh. hahaha... ;p
Its a package.

Ultimately, give the rite man the rite tools... and wonders would happen.

Same time, same place...just different cameras.

does a ferrari make a better driver?
A ferrari can allow a better driver to go faster.

does a parker pen make a better writer?
Who writes using a pen nowadays? ;p

does a better computer make a better gamer?
A better computer doesn't hold back a good gamer due to lag.

does a better school make a better student?
A better student will benefit from a better school because it will push the student to greater heights.

does a better country make a better citizen?
Yes. Can be observed from the people of Japan and certain states in US.

not forgetting, does a golden toilet bowl mean that the person is going to produce gold inside? :bsmilie:
It's just less prone to corrosion.. That's something for the rich to think about.. ;p

Hmm...not really, DSLR just opens up more opportunities. A photographer whom does not know how to utilise these new opportunities is therefore not 'better' just because he/she has a DSLR.
;p Hadn't there already been plenty of discussion about equipment and the photographer?

Ultimately, it's this... you can start with something simple, if you find it holding you back, then you know it's time to upgrade. ;p If, on the other hand you start with something complicated, sometimes you may not be able to identify your own limit and doesn't know how to proceed.

yar, but a ferrari with a poor driver will just end up with gonecase car and gonecase driver

er, yar, ok, no one uses pen except me, but then i have exams :(

a better computer.. you give a cs noob, he still going to get knifed to death by more experienced player with lag

agreed, given certain conditions.. the moral of story is after all, better photographer will make better pictures with dslr.

There are essentially two main differencea bet a Dslr and a normal pns.

1) size of sensor (no # of pixels, but the physical size of the sensor)
2) ability to change different lens

Use to be a third different which is the view in the viewfinder and the image on the sensor but it was largely negated with live view.

There are some pns that can set manual, shutter-priority and aperture-priorty (my fuji can), but with the tiny sensor, its effective focal lenght is usually so short that really does not produce great DOF shoot or give too much variation with shutter speeds.

With a Dslr, the photography can produce more varied photographs than with a pns for the same subject matter. It provide the abilities to produce a better picture (which does not equate to a better photograher)

i also want to add on, that i am a huge advocate of prosumers, having used them in the past - a prosumer's live view function, especially with the live histogram will give a newcomer a huge edge when it comes to dslr later on. i have also said time and time again that even p&s can produce good pictures, let alone prosumer.

but you see, when a photographer grows, some decide that they want to do more, try new things. this does not mean to say that those who choose to stay with p&s and prosumer are inferior, that is not true, a photographer is never ever judged by his camera, but by his photographs. there is a reason why the term is "photographer", not "cameraman". there is no right and wrong, so long as you feel comfortable with your prosumer, and do not feel limited by it, by all means, it is entirely possible based on the type of shots you like to take.. and stay with it and be content, and do not listen to the equipment whores who will tell you to upgrade.

if you think that there is something more you want to do, and what you have now cannot allow you to do it, like what some other members have mentioned above - even more shallow depth of field, low light handheld photography which require fast shutter speeds, the list goes on.. then by all means upgrade, particularly if you know how to maximise your utility from the dslr.

I like your concept of "photographer" and "cameraman". It says a lot.

Does a DSLR made a better Photographer......

No....

But is sure helps.....

compact/SLR/DSLR/TLR/pin hole/MF/LF ... Canon/Leica/Nikon/Olympus/PhaseOne/Pentax/Ricoh/Seagull ... do not make anyone a better photographer. equipment do not tell you when to press the shutter button, how to frame the image etc. whether to be better or worse is up to the photographer himself/herself.

DSLR is design for advance users, so it suppose to take you to the next lever, if it does not serve the purpose, it will be long gone.

anyway.......

camera is just a tool,
nothing but just only a tool,
just get the right tool to do the job right.

does you ever see a very skillful craftsman boast around what the most expensive tools or sharpest knife he has?
or any artist boast around his has a fine collection of sable paint bushes plus wide range oil colors?

if you are a professionals, do you like to list all your tools you has in your namecard?

so does a DSLR made you a better photographer.....................?
only you have the right answer.

ts - if this is some prosumer pride contest, then you are going to lose, there are more dslr users than prosumers here

and i will say that your photograph is lacking in composition and eye for detail.. for what it makes up in sharpness (overdone though) and seeming "clarity"

what is the point? if you want to put forth the point that your camera is better than others.. then you are no better than those who put prosumer users down..

just as close-minded, and blind to logic, as they are

Sorry got carry it away... Sorie guys.. Thanks for all ur fuys wonderful advise will serve as a guide for Newbie like mi. Next time will tell them off if I happen to hear the DSLR only uses M mode.. Thanks guys...:embrass::)

nope... better thinking makes you a better photographer.

as others have said earlier, a dslr makes it easier to get good shots, but sometimes using basic equipment (e.g. p&s) forces you to be more resourceful and creative.

however, one big advantage a dslr has over the average p&s is the use of an external flash for flash photography. mastering flash photography is one of the hallmarks of a good photographer (unless you shoot landscapes only, or don't use the flash at all).

:)

Just ask me lah.... i owning 3 types of cameras at the same time...and i use them for different situations.

During company events and during weekends when i go into serious photography work, I will use DSLR.
When i go travelling overseas, i will use Prosumer.
When i go small party, visiting friends' house, i use P&S.

Btw i got 1 old uncle who advised me something which i think is quite true.
Given the same skills a person has, he will be better off with a DSLR because of the image quality.
Well, i strongly believe.
This uncle which ever camera you give him, he will put to fully auto and fire off!
Without scrutinising the composition, the final results showed that his DSLR is far far better than his P&S.

Don't know, but for me I'm always using M mode on my DSLR as it gives me full control as compared to the other modes.

But in terms of picture quality I would say that DSLRs would be better than the average point and shoot camera out there.

Whether or not you get good or bad photos would be all up to your artistic sense and NOT the camera.
