bomb shelters in HDB flats - how do they work?

There's no value in bombing residential area, in military/terrorist point of view, it will only result in more cost to rebuild if they win the war and take over Singapore.

Usually they will bomb embassy/camps/ammo dump/and possible command centers to kill the leaders, killing residential is really ineffective.

Probably it's main purpose is to house you for a time being from possible stray bombs. and give you a sense of security.

Anyway should there's be war, most probably you'll be in camp. :p

thanks flipfreak.

oic, i think i have a rough idea now what the "bomb" or "house" shelter is for... More like for war time when the enemy has gained access into the flat or there are some terror attacks? (not of the 9/11 or missile type cos that type sure no chance of survival!)

i tink it is a joke when they say only a column is left when the rest is destroyed!

i dun think the shelters can withstand an impact tat totals the whole building.

The second document mainly talks about how to maintain the shelter and what not to do - I don't see any remarks on how it will "save your ass one day".

It appears that the dcouments in HDB no longer describe it as a bomb shelter, but an emergency shelter. In that case, it isn't a bomb shelter as much often described, but at best, a mere panic room.

part 2 point a and b shows how the parts of the shelter works to potentially save your butt. :bsmilie:

i think in times of war, ppl will be moving everything inside to the corridor.

Pre requisite : U get the time to reach the shelter and dig out all the junk you accumulated over the years !:sweatsm:

actually yar, i'm intending to do the darkroomish thing the day i get my flat.

but quite unsure about the water supply/drainage thing....secondly, think the shelter abit too small to put in table for printing...........which is kinda wasted.....haiz....

maybe i should mount the enlarger on a retort stand so that i can enlarge big big...and then do a column developing rather than tray...which is even more laychey....ARGH!
:(

any suggestions?

this is one of the stupidest ideas EVER started by the HDB. Considering it cost each of us house owners so much money to build. It is really bordering on idiotic....

Does anyone know who was responsible for starting this policy?

This is a permanent presence that remembers you that you need protection.

Hmm, well thanks for the reference. It does look like they are not intended to act as bomb shelters, but more as panic rooms instead :) Key word being "bomb".

If the force of the explosion does not hit the builidng, and only shrapnel is involved, I thought that concrete walls should be able to stop shrapnel.

protection against shrapnels in the event of explosion.

beside use it as darkroom, whether wet or dry darkroom,

this bomb shelter also have lot of usage, like karaoke room, majong room, home theatre room (specially for porno movies :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:) cos it will be almost sound proof once the door is closed.

don't worry, if someone want to bomb Sg without warning , it will be very silly to bomb HDB estates.

and our garment will ask us to empty the bomb shelter if our home security at stake.

Not if your living room has full length windows.

I don't think these shelters are built to withstand direct hit. But more so to help survive the compression effects of a nearby explosion.

A couple of things I don't understand about the design is that rubber gaskets are life-span limited item... so how long before it starts to lose it's sealing effect. And how come, the door is sealed but the ventilation sleeves are open (at least for the case of my house). How to prevent entry of toxic gas?

Reinforced concrete walls can take a surprising amount of damage before they crumble. The shelters are not only meant to prevent sharpnels but also the shockwave from explosions. In some ways shockwaves are more dangerous than sharpnels in causing bodily harm.

It is a place to keep unwanted bombs.:bsmilie:

:bsmilie::bsmilie:
To keep them from roaming the streets and becoming mongrel/feral bombs.

Just curious... For those of you who have such shelters in your flat, what do you put inside? All your junks and store, or do you make it into some nice cosy corner thingy?

They must be movable when necessary I believe, otherwise it defeats the function of the shelter?

i jst find tis idea studpid, imgaine, one tall build standin when the rooms are gone... another and hw are we gonna reach to ppl on the top most floor?

haha. Why wanna try isit?
U Mas Selamat?
Can have ur autograph?
U more popular den taufiq and hady now leh....
picture all over singapore... and the world...

some of my friends not sure when they got their brand new flats. no instructions pasted yet or anything like dat. so far we've all been living in the older HDB flats without b. shelters.

yes, i did hear when there is a bomb attack, when everything crumbles, the column stands firm. I dunno if its a joke or for real?! So the occupants in such a scenario will wait for a helicopter to rescue them? Those on the very high floors will get a panoramic view of what's left around them?!

hmmm ... at that point in time, I am not too sure if I am brave enough to open the doors to enjoy the "panoramic view" .... legs probably jelly like dunno wat looking down at 24 floors of destruction ...

once tried walking on steel mesh outside Courts Tampines Megawarehouse ... on the top floor, looking 3 floors down thru the steel mesh ... boyyyyyyy...
