Because thanks to some people in the past who come to kopitiam to spam to increase their post counts.

Thus the admin set a rule, all posts in kopitiam will not count towards the post count, thus u see a big fat zero there.

Since your hubby owns a Canon, you might wanna check this thread out to roughly gauge the price for lenses:
http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=131801

The difference between a f/1.4 and a f/1.8 is not only in terms of the speed, but bokeh as well (or put simply in layman terms "Background Blur". The in front sharp-sharp, behind blur-blur thing).

Of cos, if you're really filthy rich, u can get the 50mm f/1.0L. But it would break your bank and budget like 3 or 4 times over so a 50mm f/1.4 will do.

As for the B+W Filter u see them talking about, its basically a piece of protective UV filter which is a general necessity for all lenses bought. Such UV filters do their job by filtering off invisible UV lights which would degrade the quality of the photo. And since UV lights are omnipresent even on a cloudy day, its a must.

B+W is one of the highly rated filters around from simple UV filters to other special effects filters. Your $400 will be sufficient to buy at least 2 B+W UV Filters for your hubby's 17-40L, 70-200L.

OH haha.

if i am not wrong, he got filter liao. but i dunno wat filter. maybe go kk ask him. so i think i have a few options here now. 50 mm 1.4/1.8, B+W filter or carbon fibre tripod. what is the price range for 50mm 1.4?

spending 300+ or 400+ on a tripod is it worth it? it's very light is it?

the f/1.4 shld be ard 500 plus. it has a faster focusing motor, nicer image quality and sturdier built. if your husband has those lens u mentioned, he wouldnt want a 50mm f/1.8. it will seem like a toy to him.:bsmilie:

The estimated price is about $800? According to the thread (if u'd clicked it) that is.
But shops might price it lower. Just head to Cathay Photo Peninsular Plaza, MS Color AMK Hub to find out the exact shop prices.

As for spending $300 to $400 on a piece of metal with 3-legs called a tripod whether is it 'worth it' or not, its like asking a lady if she needs to spend $300 for a LV Purse when a $50 Purse will do.

Ok, might be a bad analogy, but then again, lugging a 2 or 3kg solid alumnium tripod is not a joke. The price for 300+ tripod? A more solid and lighter tripod. Kinda like putting on a Carbon Fibre Bonnet Mod for a car to lighten the burden on the car to get it to run faster with better fuel mileage thing.

CF tripod? Gitzo ones I think costs like.... $300+ to $400+?

Don't think a Gitzo CF tripod is so cheap. More likely to be double that price.

Me confused on what to get now. Good ones is exp. Cheaper one not so good. Photography is indeed an expensive hobby. ;p:bsmilie: But anyway, Thanks so much for all the helpful responses.

Hi all,

I am new here and only I know little bit about photography. My hubby is a hobbist in photography. As Christmas is coming, I am thinking of buying him a lens as present. My budget is less than $400. Not a big budget. Any recommendations for suitable lens? :) Thanks in advance.

Actually his hope is to get a full frame camera. Besides I dunno wat is a full frame camera. He want to save money for it. :bsmilie: i know that would cost a few Ks so I definitely no money to buy for him. :bsmilie:

and 50mm 1.8 is used for what one?

From the horse's mouth, maybe you have to have a face-to-face talk with your hubby ..... check with him what lens he has kept with his friends, offices, cars, under-the-bed, etc ... and especially watch out for those lens with a RED or GOLD line (coz your $400 budget will not get you any of such).

Hate to see that your present will be in mint condition! .....

We have a lot of hobbists here too, but their gear collections can be worth the price of a car .....

why don't you tell him that you are getting him a power drill
and suprise him with a Gitzo tripod or monopod
non CF also can, should be around your budget
but only the legs, he can reuse his current head until next year

monopod wat? :p

Gitzo non CF is also light? Head meaning wat ah?

aiyo, i think he rather take photos of girls in bikini. haha :bsmilie:

If you intent to give him a really good surprise Xmas gift, then use the $400 to book him a good model ($400 should be able to get a NUDE model) .... this is the ultimate surprise gift most hobbists here would dream to get from their other half .... ..... now the problem is how much you willing to pay for the hotel room? .....
or like many here, $400 can give him almost about 6 weekend shooting with some organisers here, including bikini ones, ... and I am sure babyfairy/predator/producer can give you some discounts too.

But seriously, this is the ideal gift for him >>>>> http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?oid=63061068
with this, you can also enjoy and appreciate all those bikini girls images he has been taking during his weekend shoots ....
