More ram or faster processor?

I format my laptop maybe 2-3 times a year to clean up the problems and rubbish hehe... and everytime after it's formatted, feels like a new computer again. I think I may do that again soon.

I'm starting to think to take those software fixes for now, and maybe CONSIDER getting another computer sooner than expected since the ram... $300 :| mmmm to decide!

Personally, I would strongly strongly recommend getting a desktop instead. Most laptop components are specially under clocked to save on battery life, thus reducing the speed of processing. Further more, better components are available for the desktop and offers better upgrade potential than a laptop.

Take the main units for speed for example. Desktop HDD goes up to 15K rpm, while laptops offer up to 7.2k rpm (standard for desktop) Processors will definitely be faster than their mobile counterparts. It's cheaper to get 4X1GB ram in a desktop than get 2X2gb for your laptop. Discrete GPUs in desktop also are way faster than integrated GPU from intel on the motherboard.

Conclusion, laptops are for travel, don't expect real speed from them. Desktops, for all their bulk and power hungry components, offer more bang for your buck in terms of speed.

it's free and legal. works pretty well for me. (nonetheless, do a Windows restore Backup first before u try)

Wah new toy arhz. Well btw u could experiment osx on it . One advice, go set ur virtual memory to 1.5x ur ram size permanently and not let windows manage the size as it would cause some overhead. Also try to have the virtual memory on another hdd if possible. If not possible at least on another partition other than the one windows is loaded on.

I'm still using my laptop (since January 2004) but it feels slow when using lightroom.
It is a Pentium M 1400MHz, 512mb ram.

It starts to become really really slow when using lightroom, so slow that the whole laptop slows down, takes many minutes to change windows etc. Takes so long for everything

Will adding more RAM help this?
Or must I get a faster processor?
Or is there other factors I need to be concerned about?

my 2nd laptop has 1gb rams also slow. let alone 512mb. time to get 2gb

2X 1GB i think its not very expensive. my place here sells for 70:embrass:

Adding RAM or changing CPU wouldn't help much. Not to forget the HDD RPM n onboard video still need to get a boast inorder to work better. So, best of all, get a new one and also, u will be having the new technology, rather than old technology.

Glad we agree. I find my new desktop much much faster than my laptop, at about the same cost.

Not forgetting the desktop would be a lot more comfortable to work on for extended hours, compared to a notebook. Plus, it's cheaper to upgrade later also.

The notebook is still important though, if you need the portability, show your work to clients, etc.

Is your hard drive the old model - 4200RPM?

Try upgrading your hard drive and maxing your RAM. It'll help alot.

I second this...my lappy is a Thinkpad X31 with same CPU as U and slightly more ram....the most significant gain is when I chuck the stock 4200rpm to a 5400rpm drive.....get the 7200rpm if you can compromise on the battery duration :thumbsup:

Most of the time, it not abt the speed or how much ram it has, the bottleneck is in the HDD itself. One thing you can try is, get a portable USB drive, plug it in and set the scratchfiles over to that drive or a USB thumbdrive. It may helps in a little way.

U mean 2nd hdd or hdd where OS is on? If 2nd hdd, right click my computer, click manage then go to disk management. U can format from there

add more ram...its a lot of difference. I have 2 GB ram on mine, I can multitask, and I use engineering software that is more power and ram hungry than photo apps.
