~ Winter in Melbourne ~

I like most of the images. In fact, the first 5 images you posted told me to look out for more because of the quality in the ability. I think they are very stunning in colour, composition and angle.

Perhaps the best part of all these images is that they were shot using the humble EOS 400D camera. Often, we live thinking that the best and latest equipment will produce the exceptional images. In this forum, we see men infected by the "buy buy buy" virus to acquire the best and latest which is in most cases, sorry for being blunt, non-essential and delusional.

Also, having met several women photographers in Melbourne, and seen the work of 1 in Singapore who is also in this forum, I can't help but think that women are actually quite gifted in the creative aspect/sense of imagery. While technicality may not be their cup of tea, when handed a camera, they can produce images that wow!

Once again, I think these are beautiful images.

Hmm... it looks like there are a few ClubSnap members in Melbourne isn't it?

Maybe we could have a meet-up?

yea at one point i was thinking about upgrading my camera but once again i am reminded of the need to know your gear vs simply buying what is expensive!

Nice shots, didn't remember seeing the clam purse.

Wish that I'm at Smith Street right now enjoying the kebab and baklava at Efes Kebab.

wooo... melbourne is soo much nicer then Brisbane~~!

Yah.. on Holiday.. (I think..seems to be working more than holidaying...)
It's cold.. ard 5 to 15.. I think it'll get colder.

Gd luck for the Exams...:D

jiven, you are making tremendous improvements. i'm sure you are enjoying photography well with all the efforts you have put in.

Great series of photos.Good job:thumbsup:

very nice... did you venture out of the city? nice scenery if you like shooting those sorta stuff.

Melbourne CBD has tremendous photo opportunities because of its good mix of buildings from different eras. The lighting is just begging you to get out to take more pictures. Temperatures in winter ranged from 2 to 18 (think A/C) and will peak at around 40 during summer (with lots of flies to swop). I graduated from RMIT too. Stayed there for 5 years.

Thanks zoossh, kelccm, fisheye and kit for the encouragement & info.. will go shoot some more.. perhaps out of Melbourne city as well.

Huh? It was so big you couldn't have missed it.. Maybe they jus put it there? There seems to be a lot of street art in Melbourne.. Hmm.. smith street's kebab.. I'll look it up.. yum. You want me to tapao for you??

Hi Jiven,

I think Melbourne is generally a very photographic city and more often than not, we do see a fair selection here on CS but I must say that this series is by far, one of the nicest I have set my eyes upon.

Thank you for sharing. I can feel my heart strings being tugged once again...

Wow.. thanks for the generous comments and you are right abt the technicality part (for me at least). I guess my reason for the 400D cam is that it's small enough for my hands.. the rest seems to be too big for me to handle.. :embrass: Photography is predominantly taken up by men as a hobby or career and it still is. So, I think your comment abt female photograhpers is really encouraging for females interested in photography. With the DSLR, I think more women are picking up and this only adds variety to the types of photos produced..

Cheers.

I do know a few women photographers or photography enthusiasts, and I have seen their creativity-motivated images. They and their images aren't the ones that are overly concerned with what f-stop or what shutter speed. They shoot what they felt like showing, and very much shot "from the hip".

Actually, I heard (at least once) an unconfirmed source saying that there are more women photographers than men in Australia.

jiven, i do have some comments or suggestions regarding the photos. but dun worry, i'm probably just talking how i feel about the photos of someone who is already shooting better than me, so feel free to agree or disagree.

there is no doubt that the first is the best and everyone enjoys it. it has sufficient details showing up despite having some total shadow. the clouds is not the most dramatic but gives enough impact. and most of all, the right capture of the reflection that burst out on the buildings showing the mood best of a city in sunset - a very hollywood manhattan kind of mood. #2 and #3 are good variations, and as they are duotones, their simple composition strikes out even more - if they are not entirely naturally occuring looks but is a result of photo enhancement with change of hues, it also shows very good eyes for post-processing.

the following pictures from #4 onwards, are good for any forumers here, but after your nepal series, i've set a higher criteria to love your photo, and was waiting for more interesting less mundane takes from #4 onwards. only until #17 No jobs on a dead planet... then i start to find the love lost in between... from  to :bheart: :dunno:  to  i like the colors, the exposure control against the sky, the form and it makes me curious what is the words written on it, and with your title, would like to ask more about it too....

a comment pass by with "compensation for the shadows", also didn't quite catch it on whether it means making positive exposure compensation (+EV) to brighten up and avoid too dark a shadow. a few photos did have strong shadows that i find could be look into. i used to have done that in the past when i pushed levels and contrast too much to give the punch but forgot about the areas lost of details. however that may be a personal preference for we have a few good photographers in this forum with such a style such as satyr and azure. #7 Victorian building is nice but it looks like what many would have done the same, i think i would most likely do the same too, unless something special strike my eyes. the exposure control is good, well focused, just need to balance the horizon. #8 Singapore my Homeland... is also special, the bottom shadow should be fine, but if you have got a companion with you, could have ask him (preferably with a complimentary bright color jacket) to walk past at the bottom. #11, #13 and #14 should be explorable with better angles if you can get sufficient support to take them without hand shake in low light.

sorry for a long post. by now, you should know that i'm a nagger....
