Just a quick question... didn't I read that Canon lenses have international warranty? So why are we talking about "grey" versions especially of this latest great L lens?

Because grey sets are cheaper mostly substantially cheaper.

What I mean is if Canon's lenses have international warranty, why are there still "grey" sets?
Unless you are saying that "grey" sets have international warranty but no local warranty? Makes no sense.

"grey" sets have no warranty.. Having international warranty is not grey leow :bsmilie:
Note that some shops like OP offers "Shop Warranty".. and those are grey..

Grey sets are sets with no warranty at all. I think you've got the definition of a grey set wrong.

Guys, I know what is grey set and what is shop warranty and what is local warranty. Pls re-read the original question I posted. Hasn't it always been said that Canon lenses come with international warranty? If so, then what is all this talk about grey sets and shop warranties?

Grey sets are Canon lens without "Insurance", local/international set are Canon lens with "Insurace coverage" and you have already paid for it. If Canon lens comes with warranty, then it will be internaional warranty.

Thanks Lightning, that makes a bit more sense. However, I've seen the 16-35M2 come with HK/Macau/China warranty card, so does that mean it comes with international warranty?

I guess you can convert to international(Tourist), but warranty period reduce to 6mths. The bottom line is Canon do buy insurance to insured against defects of their products. Just like Harvey Norman, their extended warrant is actually insurance. So if anything spoils they will claim the insurance and repair or replace the product for you. So for Canon, a local warranty insurance may be cheaper, so they can sell the lens at a lower price. While international warranty insurance is more expensive, therefore you have to pay a bit more. That is also the reason why after you convert the warranty from local to international, the warranty period is reduced by half. Cos 1 year local warranty premium = 6mths international warranty.

Just got my hand on a 16-35 MkII....whoa....wide on the 5D......and woes.....the dust also very visible.......and wide...spread......seems like the 5D I am using is so prone to dust....is this normal or is it the way I use it?

hey can you test if there are vignetting with this version of the lens!

Hey lightning so does this mean that if I buy the lens in china that only comes with 1 year CHINA warranty I can convert it to 6mths international? Is there a reliable source for this or just hearsay? Because I'm considering buying a lens in china and the thing that weighs constantly on my mind is the international warranty part. Can you offer more information on this please?

Much appreciated

5D has a full frame huge sensor and that definitely attracts dust... :bsmilie:

I converted my video cam's warranty. :) I bought the camera in HK, went to Canon HK (Walk a long way) and got it converted to tourist warrant, which is like international warranty.

There seems to be some vignetting....but have not fully tested out yet just got it yesterday evening and had a full day of PTM...but got a full wedding shoot for a friend tomorrow....will see how this lens perform....if anything it looks cool with its slightly oval hood...figured on a 5D plus the 24-105 on MkII, I have a true 16mm to a cropped 140mm or so for a small church wedding should cover pretty useful focal length....ya dust is a pain on 5D....

Hey guys! Do you know if this Warranty conversion applies to DSLR bodies? Any charges to convert? And where is the place to do it in HK? Thanks!

Anyone knows where to get a 1D Mklll in HK or Singapore and at a good price? Tried Tin Cheung but no luck.

Thanks!

I did not pay any charges for the conversion. Anyway 1DMIII is out od stock in Singapore and most country. I think each country every dealer is given one copy to sell only. The has to wait another 1-2mths for another copy and so on. I think that is how they will keep the price up.

While I was in HK, I called Canon HK and they told me the International Warranty conversion does not apply to DSLRs so I got my Mklll with local HK warranty. Means nothing I know since I use it here in SG but the savings buying in HK were substantial. More than makes up for the service fee Canon SG charges should I need to send it in. And think about this, the warranty is only for a year and a camera like this is supposed to be tough.

Back to the 16-35 Mkll. Anyone has both the Mkl and Mkll and can verify that improvement and justify the upgrade?

Thanks!

Oh...that is so sad...I wonder why it does not apply, may be to discourage people from overseas coming to HK to buy. Do they have a lot of stock for 1DM3 in HK? What is the price like? Singapore is selling between $6400 - $6500.
