Erm, so who can really provide a logical reason against GST, that is backed up with proper economics? =/

singapore - complaining nation? Indeed, I remember reading online forums on the topic of Wee Shu Min that spoke of nothing but her mole and her boobs. What happened to logical, straightforward thinking instead of diversion to other issues to escape the reality that no one can provide a proper rebuttal other than emotional outbursts? =/

Yo bro,
Take it easy lah, I suggest u don't take it so seriously over the conversation here in the Kopitiam.
The garment will explain more when time comes.....so just treat it as a talking C**k session here!
Singapore a Complaining nation? You mean other country folks don't complain meh?
Diversion or not, endless discussion here will lead us to no where also. What do you expect over here then?
Whenever I ponder over such issue, especially politics issue, I just bring out my Cam and shot my pet Doggies or bring out my telescope and scan the sky, looking for my favourite planet Jupiter, and that's when I see how insignificant humans are!

HAve a nice week ahead! .....Weekends is near again! :)

instead of increasing the GST which in hit the poor as well
the gov should increase the income tax
That is a sound argument to make;

In fact, while it is clear to anyone who puts his mind down to it that GST is a naturally regressive tax which hits the poor more.. I can show this by means of an example:

CLUBSNAP forumer earns say, $4K a month, and spends $2K of this on whatever things, note that these things are generally a mix of NECESSITIES and non-essentials.

Lower income guy with no access here, earns $1K a month, and spends maybe $900 of this on mostly essential goods. Note that he cannot adjust down his $900 spending much because they are essential.

So with the 2% increase, CLUBSNAP forumer ends up with a savings of $4000 - ($2K / 105% x 107% ) ~ $1960 or so, slightly above that, too lazy to calculate.

Lower income guy ends up with $1000 - ($900/105 x 107) ~ $82 savings, I remember roughly. The proportional decrease in his savings is larger! Not to mention, the CLUBSNAP forumer can buy less lens and filters for the month and end up spending less in response to increased GST.

-HOWEVER-, (and please do not just take my point which is against the GST alone) do note that PM Lee had mentioned that an aid package will actually be devised to help the lower income group. Now, the details have not been announced yet, or at least I am not aware about it at this point in time.. But I think all of us should reserve judgement with regards to whether the GST increase would actually aid the lower income group UNTIL it is proven not to do so. =/

Nah, I don't take it seriously, but 7 thread pages of almost 100% talking **** is scary.. =/ I mean, if we complain that the government doesn't listen to our feedback, I look at the resultant feedback that can be garnered from most of the population and sigh.

But you have made a valid point in that the government will explain more.. And yes, everyone complains, but unfortunately, most of them actually try to provide some semblance of logical rebuttal instead of pulling in peanuts and moles and breasts.. =/

I NEED TO PHOTOG MORE GAHHHHH, but anyways, you siao la.. Tuesday only.. Weekend just ended leh. =(

Hahaha....anw....how to feedback our thinking to the garment har? Kekekek..... :bsmilie:

we all know that corporate tax mustgo down lah, thus GST must go up lah, but wat I don't understand and cannot comprehend is how does GST up gonna benefit the poor? Doesn't make sense loh. Aiya....okie okie, lets wait and see lah hor!
Haiz....garment shld think about maintaining/lowering GST for necessities such as rice, cooking oil etc.... other luxury items bo bian loh! Medicine and Hospitalisation GST thingy shld be scrap....etc....
Hahaha...the breast, mole thingy, just treat them as an extra feature lah! kekekek..... not everyone reason the same way mah!

Sometimes Siao is good you know! The character "Ji Gong", the crazy monk always siao siao, but he is a happy character!!
anw, have a wonderful nite ahead lah! :bsmilie:

Personally, I think its rubbish to believe that our votes can be traced.

ahbian u r so naive to think that the votes can't be trace. the voting slip has a serial no. & this no. is next to ur IC when u go into the voting center, this is to verify citizen who voted & citizen absent. u tell me can trace or not? the vote is secret is relative to the guy next door (may it be ur friends , neighbours or voting booth), not secret to the ruling party.

a true incident: my friend's neighbour send their son to kindergarten & was rejected. after a few unsuccessful appeals, they went to look for the MP for help. the MP very bluntly told them to look for their prefered MP to give their son a seat in kindergarten cos this is a P-A-P kindergarten. "u voted for opposition right? ask ur opposition MP to give u a kindergarten"
(yes, u guess it right, this incident took place in potong pasir)

i really dun know what to say... education not for the whole nation? a brand thing? oh man...

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/241058/1/.html

SINGAPORE: The Goods and Services Tax will be increased to 7 percent, from the current 5 percent. This was announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Parliament on Monday.

Mr Lee said more details would be given in next year's Budget Speech which has been scheduled for 15 February.

The Prime Minister made the announcement when responding to the issues raised by MPs over 4 days of debate - among them the widening income gap in Singapore as a result of globalisation.

Stressing that globalisation was here to stay, and Singaporeans would have to deal with its impact, Mr Lee said this was something that could strain the country's social compact, and this was why it was essential that there would be a whole set of measures to tilt playing field in favour of the lower income group.

Adding that the GST increase would help finance enhanced social safety nets to help this group, Mr Lee said it was better to raise the GST when the economy was doing well. - CNA /dt

Economy doing WELL, then should restore CPF to 16% or even 20% first right? sigh... so fast forget about how "S'poreans ride out the recession together through pay cut and CPF cut" haha

If we have a surplus why do we need to increase tax for the people? It does not mean we run the country with $430M, but that after all the Billions of annual spending is accounted for, the government has $430M more income than cost. Some years the surplus is even higher. I am not saying we should be in deficit but spend some of that surplus...now.

doesn't this sound familiar? NKF also practising the same management model. got lots of money in the bank, but when it comes to aid... fill forms & wait... then... he not approve, she not approve, everyone else also not approve except those on the verge of sleeping in the street. amazing "successful" model, which can only work in the civil sector where no competition exists & no one dares question.

the whole GST thing is about raising the tax to help lower income group. ever thot about those with absolutely no income? old folks & retrenched personnel w/o jobs (like 50yrs old) but not old enuf to withdraw CPF AND still has a family to feed? lower income vs no income... how does this gonna work out?

Serious?? Hmmmmm....... That's bad if it's true! :thumbsd:

ask those who went into the voting booth before. when u reach the voting center, the 1st thing u hand out is ur IC, they checked & then return u together with a voting slip, then u go into the booth to put that sacred cross. u think they take IC to laugh at the mug shot? :bsmilie:

ACtually, I think he was talking about the MP incident..

So why didn't your friend just call the Straits Times and P@WN that MP? I'm sure if Wee Shu Min can be dealt with that way, the MP would have gotten P@WNED too, so pardon me if I say that your story is, by logical deduction, not very believeable. =/

No.... I meant the schooling thingy. Urban legend lah is it?

anw, this reminds me of one of the Thomas Edison invention, a vote counting machine that he invented. Politician laugh at his invention though....as during the olden days, cheating was pretty common...said one of the politician.

Yeh....I know about the voting thingy, been there 5 yrs ago....Oh yeah, I saw the S/N though! Can't finger out why do they need a S/N. Forgot what's the reason given liao.
Maybe just like the big sweep lah, need to authenticate a true copy loh! They're scared that you bring in 10 copy and vote the opp candidate mah! :bsmilie:

u know who runs SPH? who r the directors? all i can say is... injury not inflicted on ur body u feel no pain. its up to u to believe... where is the illogical part? my friend knows his neighbour for more than 20yrs already.

Let me take this... ;)

Lets start with our current tax structure... the lower 30% or so income earners are already income TAX exempted once their income falls below certain $$$. Of course there are other taxes and fees that they have to pay. So this already effectively reduces their "spending power" which some can hardly cope with the increased cost of living through inflation and price hikes.

GST is a form of taxation that taxes EVERYONE as long as they spend their income, since essentials are not exempted, this means that the poorer population would have faced a double whammy both in inflation and GST.

From FY 06 Budget statement GST receipts are estimated to be $3.6b and $3.75b for FY 05 and 06 respectively. Assuming the same spending habits of the population this would translate to a linear growth in GST receipts in addition to inflation ie 4.16% increase to $3.906b in FY07. If you add another 2% into it, then it would become $3.984b.

(referenced to Q1 linked here) Now ask yourself, would a increase of $0.078b help in the Govt expenditure of $30.62b (estimated from FY06 budget).

At the end of the day... it just means the poorer are similarly Taxed and their burden increased.

I was  when I was told that group/s of kids/people hired/paid by the garment have infiltrated/joined forums/sites/blogs to provide reason/s and provide positive comments on unpopular policies to stem the unhappiness by cyberpersons like u and me.

Just by looking at the number of new members joined this forum (and others) in recent months and the appearance of these sudden ardent vocal supporters seems really out of the normal ordinary/typical demographical computer savy people.

What do you think?

My membership experience here tells me something is more than just fishy.... LOL

Its not a place to stay anymore...

....we all know that corporate tax mustgo down lah, thus GST must go up lah....

Not necessary... what must go down is the COST of business.

First 3 years no corporate tax.. then follow some taxation formula.

But when you are doing business and not registered for GST...every other cost, less salary, is 7% more.

However, the top 2 cost of business are property Rentals and Salaries. For the latter, it shouldn't be affected. But the former might be increased by 7%...and this is before even making a profit.

rentals dun go up by 7%, they go up by 15 - 24%. chip bee gardens used to rent out SOHOs at $1800, now its going up to $2200. how many percent is that? cost of bizz in s'pore is still high, less the corporate tax.
