Nokia under probe after phones blow up
THE HAGUE -- A Dutch consumer watchdog on Tuesday demanded Finnish telecoms company Nokia conduct an in-depth investigation after two Nokia mobile phones exploded, injuring their owners, in the Netherlands within a few months.
On Monday Dutch media reported that a supermarket employee suffered leg burns when a Nokia mobile exploded in his trouser pocket.

In August a 33-year Dutch woman suffered burns to her face when her phone, also manufactured by Nokia, exploded. At the time Nokia said the accident in Amsterdam occurred because the woman had not used an original Nokia battery in her mobile.
'Now they cannot say any longer that these are just incidents, this is the second time in a short period that a Nokia phone exploded,' Juliette Oolders of the Consumentenbond said.
According to the watchdog organisation the latest incident involved a new Nokia phone with the original battery.
The Consumentenbond has sent a letter to Nokia demanding an in depth investigation. The watchdog has also alerted the Dutch government inspection service to the potential dangers of Nokia products.
In a reaction to the Consumentenbond the Dutch Nokia division said it is investigating the latest incident.
'In past cases in Europe of exploding phones investigation showed that no original batteries were used,' a spokeswoman for the company said.
She would not elaborate on other European incidents with exploding Nokia's. -- AFP
