Wide-angle converter for EF 24-85

Trying out a wide-angle converter for 24-85 to convert it to "16.8mm" for use on 1.6x cropping factor DSLR (26.9mm equivalent field of view).

100% crop of top (some CA is present)

All pics are unprocessed and shot using parameter 2 on 300D (i.e. 10D's default settings). Aperture used is f8.

I'll likely use this as a cheap "wide-angle lens" for dinner table photos.

Trading off some edge image quality and CA, you've just managed to (nearly) eliminate the crop factor that plagues DSLRs.

If the trade-off isn't visible in the typical 4R or 5R table shot prints for wedding dinners, I think it is a viable wide angle option.

Have you tried the various F-stop ranges to see if the image quality improves, etc?

I used Olympus WCON07 0.7 wide-angle converter. This is mounted onto the filter thread of the 24-85 via a 67mm-55mm step-down ring. There is no vignetting at all.

Haven't tried different apertures yet. I used f8 which is a sweet spot for the 24-85.

The converter costs ~$180. Step-down ring costs $7-9.

17-40 is probably too big to be used with this converter (which vignettes with even the EF-S 18-55). Another one (0.8x) meant for Olympus E10/E20 might be suitable but that is expensve (>>$300), big and heavy.
